Summary: A study investigating pain conditions in US adults found that headache and temporomandibular disorder (TMD) often co-occur and are closely related. It was also found that headache can be attributed to TMD rather than being a primary condition. The study highlights the importance of comprehensive assessment and individualized management for alleviating the burden of headache and TMD.

Summary: This systematic review evaluated the presence of comorbid conditions among patients with temporomandibular disorders (TMDs). The results showed a high prevalence of chronic pain comorbidities among patients with TMDs, with over 50% reporting chronic back pain, myofascial syndrome, and chronic stomach pain. Psychiatric disorders were less commonly studied in this population.

Summary: This study examined the association between mood and anxiety syndromes with physical conditions, revealing differential associations of specific mood-anxiety profiles with headaches, heart problems, and back/neck pain. Subtyping depression and anxiety may facilitate research and intervention work in multimorbidity.

Summary: Headache attributed to Temporomandibular Disorder (HATMD) is a common secondary headache among patients with chronic myogenous TMD and primary headaches, often presenting as migraine. Unlike primary headaches, HATMD is associated with higher headache frequency and examination-evoked masticatory muscle pain, but surprisingly few measures of facial pain, general health, and psychological distress. Understanding these differences is important for developing targeted strategies for HATMD management.

Summary: In this study, it was found that the plasma concentration of calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) was not significantly associated with chronic temporomandibular disorder (TMD) myalgia/arthralgia or frequent/chronic migraine. The study also evaluated the relations between CGRP concentration and clinical, psychological, and somatosensory characteristics of the participants. The results showed that CGRP concentration was not a reliable biomarker for TMD and migraine.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of botulinum toxin type A (BoNT/A) in patients with temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) associated with masticatory muscle pain (MMP) and headaches. The results showed that BoNT/A treatment was effective in reducing pain and improving related symptoms compared to the placebo.

Summary: The study found that there was no significant association between temporomandibular disorders (TMD)-related pain and migraine or tension-type headaches (TTH), but muscle-related TMD pain (mTMD) may be associated with TTH. Bayesian sensitivity analysis showed that the estimates of the regression models were stable, demonstrating the validity and consistency of the estimates.

Summary: Bruxism, or teeth grinding, has been of interest to dentistry due to its potential damage to the teeth and periodontal structures. This literature review aims to examine the relationship between bruxism and non-temporomandibular disorder (TMD) pain conditions. The findings suggest that although there is a correlation between bruxism and certain headache conditions, the underlying mechanism remains unclear.

Summary: The purpose of this prospective cohort study was to observe if OSA treatment provides a reduction in temporo-mandibular disorder (TMD) pain and headache attributed to TMD in patients with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) after 18 months of OSA treatment. Significant reductions in intensity of pain-related TMD and headache attributed to TMD were observed in patients with OSA after 18 months of OSA treatment onset, while no difference was observed in subjects not undergoing or discontinuing OSA treatment.

Summary: This study evaluated the association between headache, myofascial temporomandibular disorder (TMD), and awake bruxism (AB). The results showed that individuals with myofascial TMD and bruxism were more likely to have headaches, and individuals who reported headaches were more likely to have AB and myofascial pain. Therefore, there is a relationship between these conditions.

Summary: Temporomandibular disorders (TMD) are musculoskeletal diseases affecting the jaw muscles and temporomandibular joints. Chronic TMD can be considered as a condition with chronic primary orofacial pain. The main objectives of treatment are to decrease pain, improve jaw joint function, and reduce muscle spasms and pain.

Summary: The purpose of this review is to provide an overview and highlight recent updates in temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) and their comorbidity with headache disorders regarding pathophysiology and management. In the last decade, there have been great advancements in the understanding of TMDs and their relationship with neurovascular pains such as headaches. Understanding of TMDs is necessary for the context of its comorbidity with primary headache disorders. The literature regarding management of these comorbidities is scarce but points to combination therapy including pharmacological and non-pharmacological approaches to optimize management. The use of CGRP receptor-targeted monoclonal antibodies or CGRP receptor antagonists should be explored for the management of chronic TMDs. It could also be used as a novel monotherapy or in combination with non-pharmacological approaches for TMDs' comorbidity with headache, particularly migraine.

Summary: This systematic review examined the association between primary headaches (PHs) and temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) in adults. The study found a positive association between painful TMD and tension-type headache, migraines, and chronic headaches. However, no positive association was found between painless articular TMDs and tension-type headache or migraines. The certainty of evidence for the results varied between very low and low.

Summary: Temporomandibular disorders (TMD) are a group of orofacial pain conditions that are the most common non-dental pain complaint in the maxillofacial region. Due to the complexity of its etiology, diagnosis and management of TMD remain a challenge with lack of consensus. Clinical examination is considered crucial in the diagnosis of TMD, while imaging may serve as a valuable adjunct in selected cases.
