Summary: Surgical fixation of multiple rib fractures and flail chest reduces morbidity and mortality compared to conservative management. However, careful patient selection is necessary for the appropriate application of surgical rib fixation.

Summary: This study aimed to examine and analyze the immediate postoperative outcomes and 6-month quality of life in patients with moderately severe traumatic rib fractures. The results showed that the surgical group had better quality of life and physical component scores in the early postoperative period, and comparable quality of life after 6 months. Linear regression analysis identified factors such as body mass index <=25, age <=36 years, fewer ribs requiring fixation, and diabetes mellitus that positively affected the prediction of the mean physical component score.

Summary: This study evaluated the impact of surgical rib fracture fixation (SRF) on patients with blunt chest trauma using national prospective registry data. The results showed that SRF can reduce mortality and the need for tracheostomy. However, the benefit of SRF is less clear in patients with minor chest injury.

Summary: Despite SSRF being recommended for patients with flail chest, the actual utilization rate is low, especially in patients over 70 years old. Older patients have a lower likelihood of receiving SSRF and a higher risk of death.

Summary: The study found inconsistencies in reporting within the investigational literature on surgical stabilization of rib fractures (SSRF). As a response to these inconsistencies, a set of recommendations has been proposed to standardize the reporting of original investigations in this field.

Summary: This study examined the impact of rib fixation in patients with isolated flail chest. The findings suggest that rib fixation improves survival and early fixation reduces the need for prolonged mechanical ventilation.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the risk factor for overall pulmonary complications in patients with blunt traumatic rib fractures. Age, injury severity score (ISS), and flail motion of the chest wall were identified as significant risk factors. A nomogram constructed using a multivariable logistic regression model showed good performance for predicting adverse pulmonary outcomes.

Summary: Surgical stabilization for rib fractures is associated with reduced readmission risk and improved survival. Concomitant surgical stabilization for rib fractures during thoracotomy for retained hemothorax may especially benefit patient survival.

Summary: Rib fractures are common in blunt chest wall trauma victims in Australia and are associated with high rates of complications and increased morbidity and mortality. This article discusses the anatomy and pathophysiology of thoracic cage injuries, as well as the use of surgical stabilisation of rib fractures (SSRF) in severe cases. Multimodal clinical pathways and strategies, including SSRF, should be considered for the management of chest wall injuries to improve patient outcomes. However, more prospective studies and well-designed trials are needed to confirm the benefits of SSRF, especially in patients with simple rib fractures and elderly chest trauma patients.

Summary: The management of traumatic rib fractures is controversial. Surgery is indicated for chest wall instability, displaced fracture endings, concomitant injuries, and uncontrollable pain symptoms. Intraoperative assessment and treatment play a crucial role in restoring chest stability.

Summary: This study analyzed the utilization and outcomes of surgical stabilization of rib fractures (SSRF) in the statewide context of California. It found significant variation in the use of SSRF, primarily driven by center and surgeon characteristics. The SSRF group had a lower 30-day mortality risk compared to the non-operatively managed group.

Summary: This study evaluated the outcomes of patients who received rib fixation after CPR, and found that there were no complications associated with rib fixation, but one infection occurred after sternal fixation. The patients had good long-term quality of life after fixation, indicating the need for further research on this topic, which would be beneficial for physicians.
