Summary: The latest dual-mobility hip joint prosthesis has an additional outer liner as a cover for the liner component and the contact pressure on this model has not been previously studied. The study conducted simulation modeling using the finite element method to analyze the geometric parameter design of dual-mobility hip joint prostheses. The results showed that the inclination angle of 45 degrees for the acetabular cup can decrease contact pressure more effectively compared to other inclination angle variations, and a larger diameter femoral head with a 45 degrees inclination can reduce the risk of implant failure due to wear.

Summary: This study investigated the impact wear of alloy steel using computational techniques combined with empirical data. The aim was to develop a low-moderate effort approach using limited resources to predict the average impact wear rate of AISI 4140 alloy steel. The wear mechanisms were explored and the prediction results were validated with empirical data.

Summary: Fracture toughness and impact toughness/energy data of high-entropy alloys (HEAs) were compiled from literature until the end of 2022. The dataset includes records of 153 fracture toughness, 14 impact toughness, and 78 impact energy measurements, along with influential factors such as alloy chemistry, processing history, phase structures, grain sizes, and testing conditions. The dataset is hosted in Materials Cloud, an open data repository.

Summary: This paper discusses the impact of coal abrasive materials and claystones on the surface wear of wear-resistant martensitic steels. Wear tests showed no significant effect of the type of coal abrasive on the mass loss of the steel samples. Surface damage included fatigue chipping and scratches caused by detached particles, and varied forms of damage were observed on claystone-treated samples. A model for the formation of coal films and their effect on wear minimisation is also presented.

Summary: This study aimed to analyze the incidence and trends of pathogens responsible for periprosthetic joint infection (PJI) over three decades. The results showed a increasing incidence of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus PJI and a decreasing incidence of coagulase-negative staphylococci PJI. Identifying these trends may help with the prevention and treatment of PJI.

Summary: The stress-controlled creep-fatigue test was conducted to investigate the damage mechanism for the CrMoV steel welded joint. It was found that the final fracture mode changed as the stress amplitude decreased and compressive holding was introduced, with the crack initiation and propagation occurring in different zones.

Summary: This study compared the revision rates of CoCr and OxZr implants after primary total knee arthroplasty (TKA) in the American Joint Replacement Registry. It found no difference in short-term to mid-term all-cause revision rates between the two materials. However, further long-term studies are needed to monitor the safety and all-cause revision rate of OxZr implants compared with CoCr implants. No definitive recommendations for or against the use of OxZr can be made based on the limitations of this study.

Summary: This study found that patients with pre-existing anxiety/depression or severe mental illness were more likely to have emergency department visits and medical complications after outpatient joint arthroplasty surgery. Compared with patients undergoing inpatient surgery, those with severe mental illness undergoing outpatient surgery may face higher risks of infection and postoperative emergency visits.

Summary: To address concerns over cobalt poisoning, a cobalt-free high entropy alloy was proposed for use in total joint arthroplasty. A TiMoNbTaW based high entropy alloy was prepared by arc melting and modified with chromium for improved wear, corrosion, and cytocompatibility. The addition of chromium resulted in significant improvements in hardness, yield strength, and wear resistance.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the impact of Florida's opioid prescription limiting law on opioid prescription and perioperative outcomes after total joint arthroplasty. The results showed a significant decline in opioid prescription without an increase in rates of patient visits, phone calls, or readmission.

Summary: The case volume during total joint arthroplasty fellowship training decreased by 14% during the 2019-2020 academic year, likely due to the economic shutdowns caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. However, there was a rebound in case volume during the 2020-2021 academic year, with a 19% increase. Certain elective case categories, such as primary total knee arthroplasty, experienced the greatest negative impact.

Summary: This study retrospectively examined the synovial fluid cell count in patients undergoing aseptic revision THA. The results showed significant differences in synovial white blood cell counts across different indications for aseptic revision. A high proportion of patients who underwent revision THA for aseptic reasons had white blood cell counts above the commonly used threshold. However, the polymorphonuclear percentage (PMN%) was less affected and could be a more reliable measure for interpreting results using an automated analyzer.

Summary: The study demonstrates that using the MAG PULSE and high-performance MAG TANDEM methods can produce welded joints with good abrasion resistance and proper plasticity. The non-destructive and destructive testing results show that the welded joint has good quality and no significant defects. The microstructure of the weld zone is dominated by martensite/bainite, and the hardness measurements confirm the expected values. The hardness characteristics of the HTK 900H steel and A6 cast profile, as well as the ductility of the welded joint, were evaluated.

Summary: Total joint arthroplasty is a common surgery with high incidence of periprosthetic joint infections (PJI). This study proposes the use of dual-analgesic loaded UHMWPE for post-arthroplasty prophylaxis, which showed increased antibacterial activity compared to single-drug loaded UHMWPE. The increased fractal dimension of drug domains in UHMWPE is associated with higher drug elution and antibacterial activity. This approach could substantially reduce post-arthroplasty mortality and morbidity.

Summary: An alternative method of cross-linking ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) medical devices, replacing the declining supply of gamma radiation, is urgently needed. This study investigates the use of peroxide cross-linking with vitamin-E stabilization and high-temperature melting for tibial knee inserts. The material showed increased wear resistance, maintained mechanical properties, and passed biocompatibility tests, making it a promising candidate to replace gamma radiation cross-linking of UHMWPE.
