Summary: The biomechanical and functional characteristics of the shoulder complex and thoracic spine were analyzed in patients with subacromial impingement syndrome (SIS) compared to healthy individuals. Patients with SIS showed reduced shoulder range of motion (ROM) and limited thoracic extension, as well as alterations in scapular position and decreased shoulder strength. These findings highlight the importance of interventions targeting thoracic extension and scapular position to improve shoulder ROM and muscle strength in the rehabilitation of SIS patients.

Summary: This study developed and assessed new procedures for estimating scapular kinematics by combining closed kinematic chain optimization and double calibration. The results showed that coupling double calibration (using either linear or logarithmic correction) to a closed-loop multibody kinematic optimization is an efficient and fast method for improving scapular kinematic estimates.

Summary: This study evaluated the ability of the linear model and the double calibration acromion marker cluster (D-AMC) approaches to estimate scapular kinematics during pitching. The results showed that the linear model estimates were within physiological limits, while the D-AMC estimates exceeded the bounds and were less physiologically plausible. These findings support the accepted pattern of scapular kinematics during pitching.

Summary: Progressive resistance exercise is the first-line approach to managing nontraumatic rotator cuff-related shoulder pain, as it can improve mechanical features of the shoulder. However, strength gains are usually small and clinically unimportant when measured in clinical trials. Patients need more than just getting stronger, as the efficacy of resistance exercise is supported by broad biological mechanisms.

Summary: Assessment of scapulothoracic and glenohumeral contributions to shoulder function during baseball pitching is challenging due to difficulties in accurately measuring dynamic scapular orientation. A new individualized linear model approach shows promise in estimating scapular orientation and may improve upon current methods like the acromion marker cluster. The study found that the linear model method accurately estimates static scapular orientation throughout a pitching motion, with smaller root mean square error values compared to the acromion marker cluster method.

Summary: This study investigated the short-term effectiveness of scapular focused taping (SFT) on scapular position and kinematics during the tennis serve among professional players with and without shoulder pain. The results showed that SFT had a positive immediate effect on scapular posterior tilting and external rotation during certain phases of the tennis serve.

Summary: Breast cancer survivors may experience kinematic alterations in scapular motion during an overhead reach task, which may increase the risk of developing rotator cuff disease. The type of surgery and the presence of impingement pain were found to have significant effects on scapular kinematics. These alterations may worsen over time.

Summary: There is a consensus emerging regarding the indications for fixation of fractures involving the glenoid fossa, but the need for fixation of fractures involving other areas still relies heavily on expert opinion. Despite the lack of randomized controlled studies and the limited value of existing systematic reviews that can only pool data from available case series, early reduction and stabilization may benefit certain specific types of fractures.

Summary: This study used magnetic inertial measurement units (MIMUs) to analyze scapulothoracic movements in stroke patients. The scapulohumeral rhythm (SHR) was found to be impaired in the paretic shoulders, with decreased scapular tilt during maximum arm flexion and arm abduction. The study also found a correlation between the Fugl-Meyer Assessment (FMA) scores and scapular anterior-posterior tilt during shoulder abduction at 60 and 90 degrees.

Summary: This study establishes a shoulder model on the drawing side of recurve archers using the finite element method and investigates the stress changes on the rotator cuff muscles at different stages of special techniques. The results show that the position of the humerus and scapula changes during the techniques, causing stress changes in the rotator cuff muscles and leading to shoulder injury and dysfunction. Corrective exercises can be used to prevent rotator cuff muscle injuries.
