Summary: This study found that children and young people with neurological impairment and oropharyngeal dysphagia who had gastrostomy had worse oral hygiene compared to those without gastrostomy, and both groups harbored Streptococcus mutans.

Summary: The Tohoku Medical Megabank Organization conducted a baseline study of the oral microbiome, revealing differences in microbial composition and community structure between saliva and plaque, as well as a correlation between microbial species and the severity of periodontal disease. The large database of the oral microbiome in the TMM biobank is expected to aid in the discovery of novel targets for the treatment and prevention of oral diseases, as well as systemic diseases.

Summary: Bacterial metabolism in oral biofilms involves complex networks and regulations, including interactions with host components. In this study, it was found that two oral commensal bacteria, S. gordonii and Actinomyces naeslundii, can utilize salivary MUC5B as a nutrient source during early biofilm formation. The presence of S. gordonii promotes the colonization of A. naeslundii on MUC5B, and synergistic effects were observed in the dual species biofilm metabolism.

Summary: High-density lipoprotein (HDL) is a small and dense lipoprotein with various functions including cardiovascular protection, structural support, anti-inflammatory properties, antioxidant effects, anti-thrombotic effects, transportation of molecules, and induction of signaling pathways. The relationship between HDL concentration and oral health has not been comprehensively studied, but there is a potential significant association between them. This review summarizes the current knowledge and suggests further investigation of the association between HDL and various oral diseases.

Summary: The study investigated the effects of taurine supplementation on cycling endurance in cold conditions. The results showed that a dose of 50 mg/kg of taurine did not provide a statistically significant benefit in endurance exercise after moderate cold exposure, but it may have some potential vascular and metabolic effects.

Summary: This study evaluated the use of a multipoint saliva analyzer to assess patient wellness in a dental practice, finding associations between different oral analytes levels with patient diseases and medical history. Saliva analysis, combined with clinical examination and medical history, can provide rapid salivary component analysis for enhanced treatment planning.

Summary: The study found that patients with periodontitis had higher concentrations of citrulline and carnosine in their saliva, while different types of periodontal disease were associated with higher concentrations of methionine, glutamic acid, arginine, proline, and tryptophan. The significant correlation between methionine, citrulline, arginine, and carnosine with clinical periodontal parameters suggests that different levels of salivary free amino acids play roles in periodontitis.

Summary: Dental health is often neglected among the elderly population due to comorbidities, such as cardiovascular diseases. However, it has a significant impact on general health and quality of life, affecting both physical and psychological well-being. This review emphasizes the main dental comorbidities in the elderly, their effect on quality of life, barriers to accessing dental care, and strategies for improving dental health.

Summary: This review analyzed 21 scientific papers on the determination of amino acids in various types of cancer in saliva. The amino acids alanine, valine, phenylalanine, leucine and isoleucine play a leading role in the diagnosis of cancer via the saliva. It is important to continue research in this direction as a logical and complete substantiation of the changes in saliva occurring in cancer, including changes in salivary amino acid levels, has not yet been formed.

Summary: Recent technological and analytical breakthroughs have enabled studies on small quantity, highly complex protein samples, such as salivary pellicle. Advances in mass spectrometry-based computational proteomics allow precise identification and quantification of complex protein samples, facilitating the determination of corresponding genes and cellular functions at the protein level through protein-protein interaction mapping. This has led to the breaking of barriers in research on small-quantity-complex-protein samples such as salivary pellicle.

Summary: This study aims to evaluate the quantitative/qualitative characteristics of salivary flow in healthy volunteers and subjects with common oral cavity pathologies before and after a 7-day supplementation with SaliflussTM, a medical device containing carnosine. By examining the characteristics of saliva and the oral microbiome in relation to oral cavity pathologies, the mechanism of action of carnosine is expected to be clarified through quantitative proteomics techniques.
