This paper discusses how the dopant concentration and the heat-treatment atmosphere affect the spectral composition of the emission, the thermally stimulated luminescence, and the kinetic damping parameters of ceramic samples of Gd2O2S:Eu. The dependences of the spectral composition of the emission of the ceramic on the dopant and codopant concentration and the excitation energy are established. Ceramic Gd2O2S:Eu possesses high transmittance for an anisotropic material (more than 40% for a thickness of 1.65 mm) in the intrinsic-emission region and an overall x-ray-luminescence intensity equal to 150% relative to that for CsI:Tl. The lifetime of the Eu3+ ion in the excited state on the D-5(0) level is no more than 450 mu s. (C) 2010 Optical Society of America.
