Summary: Low-income and food-insecure households are at risk of poor dietary quality. This scoping review aimed to identify the contributing household factors to dietary quality and food security in US households of school-aged children. The review found that parental behaviors, child/adolescent behaviors, food procurement behaviors, food preparation behaviors, and household environment factors are the main themes affecting dietary quality and food security. The findings suggest that addressing these factors through education and improving organization and planning in the household environment may be effective interventions for improving dietary quality and food security.

Summary: In various countries of the global south, school feeding programs are implemented to alleviate short-term hunger in children, improve their nutrition, and provide employment opportunities for food vendors. These programs have a significant impact on pupils' nutrition, as well as improving farmers' livelihoods, productivity, and food security.

Summary: The study found that hunger was the main reason adolescents participated in the National School Lunch Program, especially for those from low-income families and food insecure households. Eligibility for free or reduced price meals emerged as a significant predictor for reporting hunger as the main reason for participation after controlling for school and student demographics.

Summary: This study examines the adoption of the CEP and BATB policies at the statewide school level and estimates their impact on increasing free and reduced-price breakfast participation. The findings show that schools that utilize both CEP and BATB experience a 14-percentage-point increase in breakfast participation, and CEP-participating schools are more likely to use BATB approaches such as breakfast in the classroom, grab-and-go carts, and second-chance breakfast. Additionally, the study finds that the adoption of BATB policy leads to a 1.4-percentage-point increase in free breakfasts served.

Summary: Improving food security and nutrition is a global challenge, and farm production diversity is seen as a viable pathway to improve household nutrition. However, there is mixed evidence on the association between farm production diversity and key nutrition indicators. A study using data from rural households in Uganda found that crop species count and animal species count were differently associated with household dietary diversity score, energy, and vitamin A sourced from markets. Crop species count consistently showed a strong positive association with energy and all studied micronutrients sourced from own farm produce consumption.

Summary: This study aimed to determine the effect of fruits and vegetables on the food security status of rural households in the Limpopo province of South Africa. The findings showed that gender and involvement in agricultural production had a positive significant relationship with the consumption of fruits and vegetables, while receiving a disability grant had a negative impact. Age, household size, and receiving a disability grant had a significant positive impact on determining the household food insecurity status, whereas gender had a negative significant relationship.

Summary: This article discusses the bias issues of the Gini coefficient as a measure of income inequality in China, and proposes a method based on multi-group Gini coefficients and particle swarm optimization algorithm to improve measurement accuracy. The research findings indicate that income inequality in China has widened from 2013 to 2018, with the urban-rural income gap being the main source of inequality. Differences in education, industry, and rates of return between urban and rural households are identified as the main causes of the urban-rural income gap.

Summary: This study examines gender gaps in food security among male, female, and joint decision-making farm households in the Dawuro zone of southern Ethiopia. Female decision-making households are less likely to ensure food security and more likely to experience chronic food insecurity, while joint decision-making households have a higher probability of being chronically food insecure. The decomposition analysis reveals significant gender gaps in food security outcomes, with the return effect playing a larger role than the endowment effect in influencing these disparities.

Summary: The COVID-19 outbreak in 2020 had a significant impact on household income and animal-source food consumption. This paper aims to examine the immediate effect of income loss on animal-source food consumption during the early stage of the pandemic. Survey data from 1301 households in Wuhan and Nanjing revealed that 69.6% (Wuhan) and 42.2% (Nanjing) of households experienced a decline in animal-source food consumption, and 47.4% (Wuhan) and 18.9% (Nanjing) suffered income loss. The study found that income loss had a direct impact on animal-source food consumption, possibly due to price increases, income loss, and insufficient savings.
