Summary: The Brain Trauma Foundation (BTF) Guidelines for the Management of Severe Head Injury were the first clinical practice guidelines published by any surgical specialty, and have been widely adopted worldwide. Implementation of these guidelines has been associated with a 50% reduction in mortality and reduced costs of patient care. Despite their success, the lack of high-quality clinical research and innovative diagnostics and treatments limits the generation of substantially new recommendations.

Summary: This prospective cohort study evaluated the impact of intracranial pressure (ICP) monitoring on short- and mid-term outcomes of patients with traumatic brain injury (TBI). The study found that ICP monitoring was associated with poorer recovery and more frequent medical interventions.

Summary: The study aimed to investigate the association between blood caspase-8 concentrations and mortality in traumatic brain injury (TBI) patients. Results showed that surviving patients had differences in age, Glasgow Coma Scale, disease severity score, head CT findings, intracranial pressure, and serum caspase-8 concentrations compared to non-surviving patients.

Summary: The study found that TBI research output increased over time and was associated with BTF guideline release. However, the increase in published TBI research was not consistent between serial editions of the BTF guidelines, and many studies did not incorporate high-quality prospective research designs.

Summary: The aim of this study was to analyze the impact of acute kidney injury (AKI) on mortality in patients with isolated traumatic brain injury (TBI) and identify associated risk factors. The results showed that 10.6% of patients developed AKI, which was significantly associated with increased mortality. Age, hemodynamic instability, rhabdomyolysis, trauma-associated coagulopathy, and transfusion of packed red-blood-cell concentrates were identified as the main risk factors for AKI in isolated TBI patients.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the outcomes of patients with isolated traumatic brain injury (iTBI) in low-income and middle-income countries. The results showed that age, Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) scores, and systolic blood pressure (SBP) at arrival were associated with in-hospital mortality risk.

Summary: Invasive neuromonitoring is a crucial procedure in neurosurgery and neurocritical care to monitor intracranial hypertension. This study evaluated the safety and efficacy of a disposable power drill compared to the manual twist drill for bedside neurosurgical practices. The power drill was successfully implemented with acceptable safety profile for ventriculostomies.

Summary: This study evaluated the predictive role of initial serum levels of calcium and magnesium in hospitalized traumatic brain injury (TBI) patients. It found that hypocalcemia and hypomagnesemia are common in hospitalized TBI patients, but hypocalcemia is not a significant predictor of mortality, while hypermagnesemia is an independent predictor.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the loss of muscle mass change in adult trauma patients with prolonged hospital stays. The retrospective analysis showed that 23% of patients admitted with sarcopenia, and patients with normal muscle mass had greater muscle mass loss during hospitalization. Older age was identified as the primary risk factor for developing sarcopenia.
