Object. The authors of this preliminary study investigated the outcome and feasibility of intraoperative microelectrode recording (MER) in patients with Parkinson disease (PD) undergoing deep brain stimulation of the subthalamic nucleus (STN) after anesthetic inhalation. Methods. The authors conducted a retrospective analysis of 10 patients with PD who received a desflurane anesthetic during bilateral STN electrode implantation. The MERs were obtained as an intraoperative guide for final electrode implantation and the data were analyzed offline. The functional target coordinates of them electrodes were compared preoperatively with estimated target coordinates. Results. Outcomes were evaluated using the Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale 6 months after surgery. The mean improvement in total and motor Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale scores was 54.27 +/- 17.96% and 48.85 +/- 16.97%, respectively. The mean STN neuronal firing rate was 29.7 +/- 14.6 Hz. Typical neuronal firing patterns of the STN and substantia pars nigra reticulata were observed in each patient during surgery. Comparing the functional target coordinates, the z axis coordinates were noted to be significantly different between the pre- and postoperative coordinates. Conclusions. The authors found that MER can be adequately performed while the patient receives a desflurane anesthetic, and the results can serve as a guide for STN electrode implantation. This may be a good alternative surgical method in patients with PD who are unable to tolerate deep brain stimulation surgery with local anesthesia.

Modulation of the optical bandgap and photoluminescence quantum yield in pnictogen (Sb3+/Bi3+)-doped organic-inorganic tin(IV) perovskite single crystals and nanocrystals

Qiankai Ba, Junu Kim, Hyunsik Im, Shenghuang Lin, Atanu Jana

Summary: In this study, water-stable, lead-free organic-inorganic hybrid colloidal tin perovskite nanocrystals with high photoluminescence quantum yield were reported. These nanocrystals exhibit bright emission, are well-dispersed in nonpolar solvents, and can be used to fabricate homogeneous thin films. The in-situ generation of a hydrophobic and oxygen-resistant passivating layer provides excellent stability in water.

Median Nerve Stimulation Facilitates the Identification of Somatotopy of the Subthalamic Nucleus in Parkinson's Disease Patients under Inhalational Anesthesia

Yu-Chen Chen, Chang-Chih Kuo, Shin-Yuan Chen, Tsung-Ying Chen, Yan-Hong Pan, Po-Kai Wang, Sheng-Tzung Tsai

Summary: Deep brain stimulation (DBS) improves Parkinson's disease (PD) symptoms by suppressing neuropathological oscillations. Inhalational anesthetics used during DBS surgery can modulate these oscillations and affect electrode placement accuracy. Research found that neuronal oscillations in the subthalamic nucleus (STN) were associated with motor disabilities in PD patients, and median nerve stimulation (MNS) aided in localizing the sensorimotor STN.

Suppression of Ionic and Electronic Conductivity by Multilayer Heterojunctions Passivation Toward Sensitive and Stable Perovskite X-Ray Detectors

Mingyue Han, Yingrui Xiao, Chao Zhou, Zijie Xiao, Wenyan Tan, Guowei Yao, Xiaoxue Wu, Renzhong Zhuang, Shiming Deng, Qi Hu, Yuxuan Yang, Zhaoheng Tang, Xunsheng Zhou, Haobo Lin, Huili Liang, Shenghuang Lin, Zengxia Mei, Cailin Wang, Qi Chen, Wei Zhang, Yan Jiang

Summary: Organic-inorganic hybrid perovskites show promise for direct X-ray detection and imaging. The study reveals that the high dark current in MAPbBr(3) single crystals is dominated by ionic conductivity. By applying a multilayer heterojunctions passivation strategy, the ionic and electronic conductivity are suppressed, resulting in high sensitivity and low detection limit.

Two-dimensional (2D) a-In2Se3/Ta2NiSe5 heterojunction photodetector with high sensitivity and fast response in a wide spectral range

Haozhe Li, Kai Zhang, Xiu Li, Baiquan Liu, Lianbi Li, Zengxia Mei, Tongsheng Chen, Qinzhuang Liu, Wenzhi Yu, Jian Yuan, Haoran Mu, Shenghuang Lin

Summary: This paper introduces a narrow bandgap, direct bandgap 2D semiconductor Ta2NiSe5 and makes an a-In2Se3/Ta2NiSe5 heterojunction photodetector, achieving a wide response wavelength range of 405-1550 nm and high performance. The potential barriers of holes at the a-In2Se3/Ta2NiSe5 interface are much higher than that of electrons, resulting in ultra-high responsivity. The photodetector shows a photoresponsivity of 12 A/W under a self-driven state and 533 A/W under a slight bias voltage of 0.1 V at 520 nm illumination. The highest detectivity is over 8.2 x 1013 Jones. The rise and fall time is shortly at 25 and 423 μs, respectively. The high-sensitive, broadband, and fast photodetector has great potential in the emerging field of 2D optoelectronics.
