Summary: There is a need for disease-modifying therapies for neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson's disease (PD). However, clinical trial designs for these disorders face challenges in assessing the neuroprotective properties of potential drugs due to unknown individual disease mechanisms. Neuroimaging methods can provide insights into disease mechanisms, help with patient stratification, and map treatment responses. This review highlights the role of neuroinflammation and mitochondrial dysfunction in PD, discusses different neuroimaging modalities and their challenges, and explores opportunities for future clinical trials.

Summary: Ensembles of nitrogen-vacancy centers are used to detect nuclear magnetic resonance signals from micron-sized samples. The large magnetic field regime is of particular interest due to the high thermal polarization and accessibility of chemical shifts and J couplings. However, coupling NV-based sensors with high-frequency nuclear signals has been challenging. This Letter presents a method that overcomes this obstacle and achieves high spectral resolutions, limited only by the coherence of the nuclear spin signal.

Summary: The addition of calcium lactate had a significant positive effect on the physicochemical properties of surimi gels made from large yellow croaker. It increased gel strength, whiteness, and water-holding capacity, while decreasing cooking loss. The distribution of water state was also affected, with the highest bound water content and shortest relaxation time of immobilized water at 1.5% calcium lactate. The addition of calcium lactate caused changes in protein structure, including a decrease in alpha-helix and an increase in beta-sheets, turns, and random coils.
