Summary: Seven new ent-eudesmane sesquiterpenoids (1-7) and seven known analogs (8-14) were isolated from Chiloscyphus polyanthus var. rivularis, a liverwort plant from China. Their structures were determined using spectroscopy analysis, electronic circular dichroism calculations, and biosynthetic considerations. Preliminary tests showed that these isolated compounds did not exhibit significant cytotoxicity against HepG2 cancer cells and antifungal activity against Candida albicans SC5314.

Summary: Two new eremophilane-type sesquiterpenoids, fusumaols A and B, were isolated from the stem-leafy liverwort, Bazzania japonica, collected in Mori-Machi, Shizuoka, Japan. The structures of the compounds were determined using extensive spectroscopic techniques, and the absolute configuration of compound 1 was determined by the modified Mosher's method. This is the first report of eremophilanes in the liverwort genus Bazzania. The repellent activities of compounds 1 and 2 against rice weevils were evaluated using the modified filter paper impregnation method, showing moderate repellent activities.

Summary: Three unprecedented ent-labdane and pallavicinin based dimers, pallamins A-C, and eight biosynthetically related monomers were isolated from Pallavicinia ambigua. Their structures were determined by extensive analysis of HRESIMS and NMR spectra. The absolute configurations of the labdane dimers were determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction, 13C NMR, and ECD calculations. Additionally, the anti-inflammatory activities of the isolated compounds were evaluated using the zebrafish model, with three of the monomers showing significant activity.

Summary: Phytochemical investigation on Euphorbia wallichii led to the discovery of twelve diterpenoids, including nine previously undescribed compounds. These compounds showed potent inhibitory effects on NO production in LPS-induced RAW264.7 cells, with wallkaurane A being the most active (IC50 = 4.21 mu M). Mechanistic studies revealed that wallkaurane A could suppress the generation of pro-inflammatory cytokines, decrease the expression of iNOS and COX-2, and regulate the NF-kappa B and JAK2/STAT3 signaling pathways to suppress inflammation and apoptosis.

Summary: Dihydro-beta-agarofuran-type sesquiterpenoids are characteristic metabolites of Celastraceae plants, and extracts from these plants have been developed into botanical pesticides. In this study, eight new dihydro-beta-agarofuran-type sesquiterpenoids were identified from the stems of Celastrus monospermus Roxb. Three of these compounds showed inhibitory activities against osteoclastogenesis and affected the expression of genes and proteins related to bone metabolism. This is the first report on the potential medical applications of dihydro-beta-agarofuran-type sesquiterpenoids in bone metabolic diseases.

Summary: In this study, two new sesquiterpenes were isolated from Laggera pterodonta, along with six known eudesmane-type sesquiterpenes, and their inhibitory effect on acetylcholinesterase (AChE) was characterized. The results showed that these compounds had a dose-dependent inhibitory effect on AChE, with compound 5 exhibiting the highest inhibitory activity. Additionally, all compounds showed certain levels of toxicity on C. elegans and displayed good ADMET properties.

Summary: Ten undescribed cadinane-type sesquiterpenes were isolated from the whole plant of Eupatorium chinense. Their planar structures were elucidated mainly through analysis of spectroscopic data and DFT NMR calculations, with the absolute configurations determined by various experimental methods. A possible biosynthetic pathway for these new sesquiterpenes was proposed.
