Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the effect of the natural polyphenol gallic acid (GA) on the NLRP3 inflammasome in DSS-induced colitis in mice. The results showed that GA could attenuate weight loss, relieve symptoms, and improve colonic morphological injury in mice with colitis. GA also reduced the levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines and downregulated the protein and mRNA expressions of the NLRP3 pathway. Furthermore, GA inhibited the expression of inflammatory markers and suppressed NO release in macrophage cells.

Summary: The study reveals the differential intestinal microbiota and metabolites in the pathogenesis of ulcerative colitis (UC), suggesting that different microbiota and metabolites may cause varying degrees of colitis. Some microbiota and metabolites may have protective roles against colitis, influencing the composition and function of intestinal mucus barrier under colitis.

Summary: Camptothecin (CPT) is a cytotoxic alkaloid derived from the bark and branches of the Chinese tree Camptotheca acuminata, with antitumor activities mainly used in colon, ovarian, liver, and bone cancers as well as leukemia treatment. CPT has been shown to protect against ulcerative colitis, reducing disease activity index and inflammatory cytokines, indicating its potential as a therapeutic agent for UC.

Summary: In this study, Lactobacillus plantarum JS19 isolated from jiang-shui exhibited strong antioxidant activity. Oral administration of L. plantarum JS19 effectively prevented body weight loss, colon shortening and damage in mice with dextran sulfate sodium-induced colitis. Moreover, L. plantarum JS19 alleviated inflammatory responses, oxidative stress, and rebalanced dysbiosis of gut microbiota. Therefore, L. plantarum JS19 may serve as a promising probiotic for preventing inflammatory bowel disease, specifically ulcerative colitis.

Summary: This study investigated the effect of S. boulardii and its postbiotics on DSS-induced ulcerative colitis in mice. The results showed that S. boulardii and postbiotics intervention improved colonic shortening and tissue damage, increased the expression of intestinal tight junction protein, reduced the secretion of pro-inflammatory factors, increased the secretion of anti-inflammatory factors, and maintained the homeostasis of intestinal microorganisms. Postbiotics intervention was more effective than probiotics. In conclusion, S. boulardii and its postbiotics effectively alleviate DSS-induced colitis in mice by modulating host immunity and maintaining intestinal homeostasis. Postbiotics are promising next-generation biotherapeutics for ulcerative colitis treatment.

Summary: This study explored the anti-ulcerative properties of perillyl alcohol (POH) on stress aggravated ulcerative colitis. The results showed that POH reversed oxidative stress and inflammatory response by inhibiting TLR4/NF-kB pathway and IL-6/JAK2/STAT3 pathway, leading to a decrease in pro-inflammatory cytokines. It also improved the physiological and histological changes of ulcerative colitis, and increased the mobility time and neurotransmitters while decreasing cortisol in mice brains.

Summary: The aqueous leaf extract of Telfairia occidentalis exhibited significant therapeutic effects in treating dextran sodium sulfate-mediated colitis in rats, as it reduced mucosal inflammation, suppressed lipid peroxidation, attenuated oxidative stress, enhanced antioxidant enzymes activities, and reduced both infiltration of inflammatory cells and mucosal damage in colon. These effects could be attributed to the phytochemicals present in the extract, as indicated by gas chromatography-mass spectroscopy results.
