Fly neurons in culture: a model for neural development and pathology

Primary neural cultures from the fruit fly, Drosophila melanogaster, enable a high-resolution glance into cellular processes and neuronal interaction. The development of the culture, along with its vitality and functionality, can be continuously monitored, and the abundance of available tools for D. melanogaster research can greatly assist in characterizing different aspects of the culture. The fly primary neural culture preparation thus offers a promising platform for studying a variety of processes relating to nervous system development, activity and pathology. Our data reveal that neural cultures derived from the CNS of third-instar D. melanogaster larvae undergo an organization process that is specific and consistent throughout different cultures, and culminates in the creation of an elaborate neural network. We demonstrate that this process is accompanied by detectable changes in the protein expression profile of the culture, indicating the involvement of multi-protein processes specific to each stage of the network's development. As a further proof of concept, we demonstrate differential expression of a particular protein family, the gap-junction constructing innexin protein family, throughout the network's life.

Microbiome-related aspects of locust density-dependent phase transition

Visual processing and collective motion-related decision-making in desert locusts

Summary: Collectively moving animal groups rely on the decision-making of locally interacting individuals to maintain swarm cohesion. However, the complex visual environment presents challenges to extracting and processing relevant information. By studying swarming-related decision-making in desert locust nymphs, we found that locusts use filtering and discrimination when encountering multiple stimuli, and assign different weights to different stimuli. These findings provide insights into locusts' cognitive abilities and support their use as a model for investigating sensory-motor integration and motion-related decision-making in swarm environments.

Exposure to a nocturnal light pulse simultaneously and differentially affects stridulation and locomotion behaviors in crickets

Summary: Being in sync with the environment and predicting cyclic changes is vital for living organisms. The circadian clock entrains activity patterns to the day-night rhythm, but artificial light at night disrupts this cycle and leads to behavioral desynchronization. This study monitored the stridulation and locomotion behavior of male field crickets under different intensities of artificial light at night. The results showed simultaneous negative (suppressed stridulation) and positive (induced locomotion) effects, indicating the importance of dark nights for synchronization at both individual and population levels.

The biomechanics of the locust ovipositor valves: a unique digging apparatus
