Summary: This study aimed to investigate the clinical features, genetic characteristics, treatment, and prognosis of patients with chronic granulomatous disease (CGD). Results showed that there were six patients with X-linked CGD and three patients with autosomal recessive CGD. Patients with X-linked CGD had earlier onset and diagnosis ages compared to those with autosomal recessive CGD. Prophylactic use of antibiotics, antifungal agents, and interferon-gamma might alleviate infection episodes in CGD patients. Rating: 7 out of 10.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the clinical characteristics of children diagnosed with juvenile dermatomyositis (JDM) in Taiwan and identify biomarkers for predicting the disease course and outcomes. The study included 47 patients, with a mean age of 7.5 years at disease onset. The most common initial presentations were Gottron's sign, muscle weakness, and facial rash. The results identified factors associated with complete clinical remission and the chronic continuous course, highlighting the importance of aggressive treatment for the latter.

Summary: This retrospective cohort study aims to evaluate the real-world benefits of direct-acting antiviral (DAA)-induced sustained virologic response (SVR) on the occurrence and progression of esophageal varices (EV) in patients with hepatitis C virus (HCV)-related liver cirrhosis (LC). The study found that DAA-induced SVR was significantly associated with a lower risk of de novo EV occurrence and progression.

Summary: This study aimed to determine the risk factors for subsequent lupus nephritis (LN) development in patients with juvenile-onset systemic lupus erythematosus (jSLE). A retrospective cohort study found that out of 48 jSLE patients without initial LN, 20 developed subsequent LN. Persistently high levels of anti-double-stranded DNA antibody and erythrocyte sedimentation rate were identified as risk factors for subsequent LN in jSLE patients.

Summary: This study compares clinical outcomes between pediatric patients with and without heart disease diagnosed with infective endocarditis (IE), and determines the risk of in-hospital death. The results show that patients with heart disease are more prone to streptococcal infections and cardiac complications, but have a lower mortality rate. Platelet count can serve as a risk factor for in-hospital mortality in pediatric patients with IE.

Summary: Food sensitization in early life can identify children at risk of developing allergic diseases. This study investigated sensitization to cow milk, egg whites, and wheat. Data from the Chang Gung Research Database was used to conduct a retrospective survey. The study found that boys were more likely to have a positive immunoglobulin E (IgE) reaction to cow milk and egg whites, and early-life sensitization to egg whites and wheat was associated with increased birth weight and length. A multivariate analysis revealed that egg white IgE positivity was linked to higher levels of total IgE, and younger age and higher birth weight and length were associated with food sensitization, particularly to egg whites and wheat.

Summary: This study investigated the risk factors associated with recurrent intussusception in children aged ≤ 3 years. Male patients had a higher risk of recurrent intussusception, and higher birth weight may increase the risk. Surgical treatment and delayed onset of intussusception were associated with a reduced risk. It is suggested to closely follow up early infancy patients who received non-surgical treatment for potential recurrence.

Summary: The Chiehyuan herbal oral protection solution (GB-2) is a traditional Chinese medicine commonly used in Taiwan to combat SARS-CoV-2. This study found that GB-2 can reduce the expression of ACE2 and TMPRSS2 in oral mucosal cells. It also showed that GB-2 can decrease the entry efficiency of various variants of SARS-CoV-2 and block the interaction between ACE2 and the RBD with specific mutations. These findings suggest that GB-2 may be a potential candidate for further research as a preventive measure against SARS-CoV-2.

Summary: This study found that the polysaccharide PS-G from Ganoderma lucidum can be used as a potential adjuvant for developing mucosal bivalent vaccines against EV-A71 and EV-D68. The vaccines induced strong immune responses, producing specific antibodies that neutralized the viruses and provided protection.
