Summary: Head trauma is the leading cause of child abuse-related deaths, and multiple incidents of abuse lead to more severe outcomes. Isolated skull fractures (ISF) are typically treated conservatively in the emergency department. This study aimed to examine the screening practices for physical abuse in children with ISF in a children's hospital ED.

Summary: Traumatic head injuries are still a major cause of death and disability globally, and the mechanics of cranial bone and its impact tolerance are unclear. This study proposed a strain-rate-dependent material model for cranial bone and applied it to subject-specific Finite Element head models to predict skull fractures in real-world fall accidents. The predicted fracture patterns matched well with CT scans and autopsy reports, showing the potential of accurately predicting linear fracture patterns.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the role of sex in the risk of skull fracture in patients over the age of 65. The results showed that older males had a higher rate of skull fractures compared to females after sustaining blunt head trauma, mostly due to falls.

Summary: The study aimed to assess the incidence of pediatric skull fractures contacting cranial sutures in abusive versus accidental trauma. It found that skull fractures contacting cranial sutures are common in both abusive and accidental pediatric head trauma, but contacting two or more sutures is significantly more associated with abusive injuries than accidental ones.

Summary: Point-of-care ultrasound skull studies have high sensitivity and specificity in diagnosing fractures in pediatric head trauma patients, significantly increasing the accuracy of fracture diagnosis. A negative study can markedly decrease the probability of a skull fracture when the pretest probability is very low.

Summary: This study found that the incidence of blunt aortic injury in patients with burst fractures of the thoracic spine is 11.3% and often missed. Risk factors for aortic injury include injury severity score, mechanism of injury (such as crush), flail chest, and neurological deficit.

Summary: This study retrospectively reviewed 17 cases of craniofacial trauma with CSF leaks secondary to skull base fractures, treated surgically with endonasal endoscopic and combined approaches. The surgical techniques were found to have high success rates and low morbidity in managing CSF leaks secondary to skull base fractures.

Summary: This study describes the clinical outcomes of patients with rib fractures in multiple hospitals in Aotearoa New Zealand. The study found a relatively high rate of pneumonia and low utilization of surgical stabilisation and pain management interventions. Maori and elderly patients had a higher rate of re-presentation.

Summary: The study found that infants under 3 months old who met the low-risk criteria had a low risk of clinically important traumatic brain injuries, but they were still at risk for traumatic brain injuries on CT scans, indicating the need for caution in managing these infants.

Summary: The study did not find a paradoxical protective effect of obesity on mortality after isolated severe blunt traumatic brain injury. Obese patients with isolated severe blunt traumatic brain injury are at increased risk of respiratory and venous thromboembolic complications, while underweight patients face the highest risks of morbidity and mortality after severe blunt traumatic brain injury.

Summary: This study aimed to identify features associated with internal carotid artery (ICA) injuries in patients with petrous temporal bone (PTB) fractures. The results showed that PTB fractures involving the carotid canal, presenting with an initial Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) score less than nine, increasing head Abbreviated Injury Scale (AIS), and mechanisms of injury by motor vehicle or motorbike crash were significantly associated with ICA injury.

Summary: Physeal injuries of the distal femur can lead to significant alterations in axes and length. Distal metaphyseal corner-type fractures are classically associated with child abuse, while sports-related fractures and car accidents are common causes in children over 10 years old. Imaging, such as X-rays or CT/MRI, is crucial for diagnosis, and both conservative and surgical treatments are valid options depending on the fracture type. Long-term follow-up is necessary due to the risk of permanent physeal damage until skeletal maturity is complete.

Summary: The study shows that implementing a multidisciplinary protocol for managing isolated linear skull fractures in a level 1 pediatric trauma center is safe and feasible. Neurosurgical consultation can be prioritized for certain patients. Further research is needed to investigate criteria for admission, interfacility transfers, and healthcare costs.
