Byrsonima basiloba A. Juss. species is a native arboreal type from the Brazilian cerrado (tropical American savanna), and the local population uses it to treat diseases, such as diarrhea and gastric ulcer. It belongs to the Malpighiaceae family, and it is commonly known as murici. Considering the popular use of B. basiloba derivatives and the lack of pharmacological potential studies regarding this vegetal species, the mutagenic and antimutagenic effect of methanol (MeOH) and chloroform extracts were evaluated by the Ames test, using strains TA97a, TA98, TA100, and TA102 of Salmonella typhimurium. No mutagenic activity was observed in any of the extracts. To evaluate the antimutagenic potential, direct and indirect mutagenic agents were used: 4 nitro-o-phenylenediamine, sodium azide, mitomycin C, aflatoxin B-1, benzo[a] pyrene, and hydrogen peroxide. Both the extracts evaluated showed antimutagenic activity, but the highest value of inhibition level (89%) was obtained with the MeOH extract and strain TA100 in the presence of aflatoxin B-1. Phytochemical analysis of the extracts revealed the presence of n-alkanes, lupeol, ursolic and oleanolic acid, (+)-catechin, quercetin- 3-O-alpha-L-arabinopyranoside, gallic acid, methyl gallate, amentoflavone, quercetin, quercetin-3-O-(2 ''-O-galloyl)-beta-D-galactopyranoside, and quercetin-3-O-(2 ''-O-galloyl)-alpha-L-arabinopyranoside.

Summary: The study evaluated the cytotoxic, genotoxic, and mutagenic effects of two synthetic 3-APA analogues on breast cancer, ovarian cancer, and lung fibroblast cell lines, with 3-APA 2 showing higher activity and selectivity index values, especially in the presence of metabolic activation. Cancer cell lines demonstrated higher genotoxic sensitivity to the compounds compared to non-tumor cell lines.

Summary: Although Brazilian livestock is highly productive, the losses caused by parasites still greatly limit these activities. This study evaluated the anthelmintic and acaricidal activities of the ethanolic extract and essential oil from Achyrocline satureioides against important endo and ectoparasites in sheep and cattle. The results showed high efficacy and significant inhibition against the parasites.

Summary: The genus Arrabidaea consists of around 170 species and is primarily distributed in the Neotropics and temperate zone, particularly in Brazil. These plants have been traditionally used for their medicinal properties, including diuretic, antiseptic, and treatment for various ailments. They are chemically diverse, containing triterpenes, phenolic acids, and flavonoids, which possess valuable pharmacological properties such as anti-tumor, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and healing effects. However, the therapeutic potential of these plants has been underestimated.

Summary: The present study investigates the photoprotection properties of cotton fabric dyed with pomegranate peel extract. The dyed fabric samples showed good color fastness and moderate to good photoprotection. The pomegranate extract exhibited high antiradical activity due to its high content of antioxidants. Addition of ZnO did not significantly enhance the photoprotection properties of the dyed fabric.
