The fixation and the bone ingrowth at the interface of porous cylindrical implants (total porosity of 37% and average pores diameter of 480 mu m) were compared in vivo to rough cylindrical implants (R-a = 5.3 mu m), both of commercially pure titanium, made by powder metallurgy. The implants were inserted into the tibias of 20 rabbits and the animals were sacrificed 4 and 8 weeks after surgery. The percentage of bone-implant contact observed in porous implant was significantly larger than in the rough ones for all of sacrifice periods, respectively, 57% vs. 46% after 4 weeks, and 59% vs. 50% after 8 weeks. The mechanical tests showed a significant increase in the shear strength of the porous implants for the two analyzed periods, 4 and 8 weeks (14 and 20 MPa), when compared with rough ones (4 and 13 MPa). These results suggest that porous implants improve the contact at the implant-bone interface and increase the fixation to the bone, improving the osseointegration. Thus, the porous implant might be an alternative to dental implant in less favorable conditions, and appear to be better fixed to bone, offering promising alternatives.

The role of nanohydroxyapatite on the morphological, physical, and biological properties of chitosan nanofibers

Tabata P. Sato, Bruno V. M. Rodrigues, Daphne C. R. Mello, Eliseu A. Munchow, Juliana S. Ribeiro, Joao Paulo B. Machado, Luana M. R. Vasconcellos, Anderson O. Lobo, Marco C. Bottino, Alexandre L. S. Borges

Summary: The study found that incorporating nHAp particles into chitosan nanofibers did not compromise their overall morphology, topography, physical, and biological characteristics. Additionally, the nHAp-loaded fibers demonstrated greater antibacterial potential and antibiofilm activity compared to the control fibers.

Characterization of Optimized TiO2 Nanotubes Morphology for Medical Implants: Biological Activity and Corrosion Resistance

Ricardo Pereira Nogueira, Jose Deuzimar Uchoa, Fanny Hilario, Gabriela de Fatima Santana-Melo, Luana Marotta Reis de Vasconcellos, Fernanda Roberta Marciano, Virginie Roche, Alberto Moreira Jorge Junior, Anderson Oliveira Lobo

Summary: The study focuses on investigating the biological and electrochemical behavior of TiO2 nanotubes-modified surfaces, revealing that the transition from amorphous to crystalline structures significantly enhances biological activity and corrosion resistance. The outstanding bioactivity of crystallized nano-structures is attributed to the increase in hydrophilicity, while enhanced electrochemical stability is due to the thickening of the ruble barrier layer beneath the nanotubes.

The Local Release of Teriparatide Incorporated in 45S5 Bioglass Promotes a Beneficial Effect on Osteogenic Cells and Bone Repair in Calvarial Defects in Ovariectomized Rats

Juliani Caroline Ribeiro de Araujo, Leonardo Alvares Sobral Silva, Vinicius Almeida de Barros Lima, Tiago Moreira Bastos Campos, Paulo Noronha Lisboa Filho, Roberta Okamoto, Luana Marotta Reis de Vasconcellos

Summary: With increasing life expectancy, the prevalence of osteoporosis has risen, leading to a search for strategies to regenerate bone tissue. The sonochemical technique was used to functionalize bioglass, resulting in modified surface characteristics. In vitro tests showed favorable cell adhesion and differentiation, with no cytotoxicity observed. Animals treated with teriparatide demonstrated new bone formation, indicating positive effects on bone tissue. Further studies are required to investigate the long-term effects of the interaction between bioglass and teriparatide.
