Summary: This new fluorescence method allows real-time measurement of lipase activity without the need to separate substrates from products. It is used to assess four major TAG hydrolases, including pancreatic lipase and hormone-sensitive lipase, by measuring enzyme activities based on the reaction of lipase sources with substrate vesicles containing NBD-TAG. This assay is potentially applicable to a wide range of lipases and can be used for high-throughput screening and diagnostic purposes.

Summary: This study focuses on the analysis of triacylglycerol (TAG) composition in Moringa oleifera seed oil (MOSO). A new method combining reverse-phase high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and mass spectrometry was used to identify and determine the TAG compositions. Approximately 13.9% of the TAG compositions in MOSO were still unknown. The new method successfully characterized a total of 33 TAG compositions, with triolein (OOO) being the dominant TAG at 39.3%.

Summary: In-depth structural and compositional investigation of biodegradable polymeric materials is crucial for their successful applications. Advanced mass spectrometry techniques, such as tandem mass spectrometry (MS/MS), have been increasingly applied in biodegradable polymer studies for detailed structure characterization and degradation monitoring. This review discusses the application of matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization mass spectrometry (MALDI-MS) and electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS) MS/MS in biodegradable polymers.

Summary: Herein, we report an unprecedented Ni-catalyzed chemodivergent annulations strategy for the synthesis of 3,4-dihydrocoumarins and 2H-chromenes, which are important building blocks in biologically active compounds. Utilizing dcype ligand, a range of 3,4-dihydrocoumarins can be obtained with good to excellent yield and wide functional group tolerance through chemoselective intramolecular tan-dem isomerization/esterification. In the absence of ligand, a useful synthesis of 2H-chromenes has been achieved via a nickel-catalyzed direct O-allylic substitution with good to excellent efficiency.

Summary: The study investigated the photoisomerization behavior of styryl 9M dye using tandem IMS and laser spectroscopy, revealing the generation of three main geometric isomers with additional minor isomers. Photoexcitation experiments showed that each geometric isomer undergoes photoisomerization upon absorption of near-infrared and visible light, with the ZZ isomer predicted to have a p-stacked configuration. The results demonstrate the usefulness of the IMS-photo-IMS strategy in providing fundamental gas-phase photochemical information on molecular systems with multiple isomerizable bonds.

Summary: The olive oil industry is now producing secondary products such as dried destoned virgin olive pomace (DDVOP) which is rich in raw protein, fiber, oleic acids, linoleic acids, and tocopherols. Additionally, a feeding trial on sheep showed that DDVOP-enriched feed resulted in milk with increased levels of polyunsaturated and unsaturated fatty acids, phenols, and tocopherols.

Summary: Recent study identified the presence of tyrosyl oleate, a subclass of lipophenols, in olive oil with anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and tissue regenerating properties.
Tyrosyl oleate was quantitatively determined and its effects on skin cells were investigated, showing improved cell viability and antioxidant activity.
Interestingly, tyrosyl oleate concentration was found to be higher in lower quality oils, likely due to processing and rancidity, suggesting a correlation between concentration and oil quality.

Summary: This study aimed to recover phenols from olive oil mill wastewater using spray-drying technology to produce a new feed for animal supplementation. The inclusion of phenols in the diet of sheep was found to have no effect on milk yield and composition, but it decreased milk urea content and somatic cell counts. Additionally, the inclusion of phenols increased the levels of beneficial fatty acids in the milk.
