This paper illustrates the compilation of an engineering geological map based on structural architecture and weathering grade of crystalline rocks occurring in the central-western portions of the Mucone River basin (Sila Massif, Calabria, Italy). The map, drawn at 1:10,000 scale and covering an area of about 100 km(2), was compiled by combining new geological and structural data with the results of a weathering-grade field survey. Five weathering classes, each characterized by comparable mechanical behaviour, have been mapped, from the class VI (residual and colluvial soils) to class II (slightly weathered rock). Both qualitative and semi-quantitative criteria (e.g. rock colour, discolouration processes, samples broken by hand and hammer, sound of the rock when it is struck by a geological hammer, Schmidt Hammer tests) were used to distinguish and map weathering-grade classes at outcrop scale. The thematic map presented in this paper aims to provide a useful tool for land planning policy, for the evaluation of geological and geotechnical hazard and for environmental and engineering perspectives of land use.

Inhibition by Thyroid Hormones of Cell Migration Activated by IGF-1 and MCP-1 in THP-1 Monocytes: Focus on Signal Transduction Events Proximal to Integrin αvβ3

Summary: The interaction between thyroid hormones and the immune system involves non-genomic actions mediated by the plasma membrane receptor alpha v beta 3 integrin. Thyroid hormones inhibit IGF-1-stimulated glucose uptake and cell proliferation, and also impact cell migration and proliferation induced by IGF-1 and MCP-1 through integrin alpha v beta 3. This demonstrates a crosstalk between genomic and non-genomic effects in regulating cell physiology.

Facies, composition and provenance of the Agnone Flysch in the context of the early Messinian evolution of the southern Apennine foredeep (Molise, Italy)

Salvatore Milli, Salvatore Critelli, Emanuele Amicone, Gloria Campilongo, Francesco Muto, Vincenzo Tripodi, Daniel Tentori, Francesco Perri

Summary: The Agnone Flysch turbidite succession in the Lagonegro-Molise foredeep basin represents a clastic wedge deposited in the early Messinian that is poorly understood in terms of depositional facies, processes, and sediment composition. Through a sedimentology and sedimentary petrology study, new insights have been gained regarding the basin architecture and provenance of the Agnone Flysch during the late Miocene. The turbidite succession is suggested to consist of depositional lobes deposited in a morphologically variable basin sector, indicating a complex unroofing history and material derivation from mountain ranges in the Tyrrhenian sector and Calabrian arc terranes.

Multivariate Analysis of Water Quality Data for Drinking Water Supply Systems

Mario Maiolo, Daniela Pantusa

Summary: The vulnerability of drinking water supply systems is influenced by factors such as failures, security loss, man-made threats, and changes in supply-water quality. Monitoring and transparency on water availability and quality are increasingly important. An analysis of water quality monitoring data was conducted using multivariate techniques to identify influential parameters and clusters.

Summary: ProPIP is a multiple sequence alignment tool based on the Poisson Indel Process model, which allows avoiding over-alignment and inferring gaps in a phylogenetically consistent way. The tool also enables inferences about insertion and deletion rates, optimizing indel rate settings for meaningful phylogenetic gap patterns.

Summary: In this observational study of MS patients, flu vaccines were found to be well tolerated with mainly short-term adverse events. Long-term adverse events were detected in a small number of vaccinated patients, but no significant differences in infections or MS relapse were observed between vaccinated and unvaccinated groups.

Chemical, isotopic and geotectonic relations of the warm and cold waters of the Cotronei (Ponte Coniglio), Bruciarello and Repole thermal areas, (Calabria- Southern Italy)

Giovanni Vespasiano, Luigi Marini, Francesco Muto, Luis F. Auque, Mara Cipriani, Rosanna De Rosa, Salvatore Critelli, Maria J. Gimeno, Monica Blasco, Elissavet Dotsika, Carmine Apollaro

Summary: Geochemical, geological, and hydrological data indicate the presence of a deep primary geothermal aquifer and two secondary aquifers in the Cotronei-Caccuri thermal area. Despite the close spatial proximity of the three thermal sites, the thermal waters have different compositions. Bruciarello and Repole waters show temperatures similar to the estimated temperature of the primary granitic aquifer.

The mudstone composition as reflected in the sedimentary evolution of a turbidite basin: The example of the Agnone Flysch (Molise, Italy)

Francesco Perri, Salvatore Milli, Gloria Campilongo, Daniel Tentori, Salvatore Critelli

Summary: The study of mudstones from the late Tortonian to early Messinian Agnone Flysch turbidite successions in the southern Apennines reveals a complex sedimentation history with a multi-source area, likely due to structural changes and depositional basin physiography. Analysis of geochemical and mineralogical signatures show variations in composition, indicating a change in relative abundance of detritus characterized by different compositions through time and space. The obtained data suggest a moderate palaeoweathering in source areas and a provenance from western, north-western, and south-western sectors of the basin.

Summary: A quantitative study using a three-dimensional model was conducted to analyze the effects of climate change in 2100 on groundwater volume and saltwater intrusion in the Maltese Islands. The results showed that the increase in water demand and the decrease in groundwater recharge were the main factors affecting groundwater resources, while sea-level rise had a marginal impact.

Compositional and Geochemical Signatures of Oligocene volcanoclastic sandstones of Abbasabad-Kahak area, NE Iran: Implications for provenance relations and paleogeography

Mahdi Jafarzadeh, Maryam Shoghani-Motlagh, Fardin Mousivand, Sara Criniti, Salvatore Critelli

Summary: This study investigates the petrography and geochemistry of the lower Oligocene volcanic-related sandstones in the Abbasabad-Kahak area of NE Iran to understand their provenance, tectonic setting, and paleo-weathering of source areas. The grey sandstones host copper mineralization and exhibit various textures and structures. They are medium to coarse-grained and compositionally rich in volcanic lithic fragments. Geochemical analyses suggest a derivation from mafic-to-intermediate volcanic sources with a low level of chemical weathering in the source areas, indicating arid to semi-arid climatic conditions. These sandstones were deposited in a remnant backarc basin, resulting from the post-Eocene extensional stage of a dismantling magmatic arc.

History of western Tethys Ocean and the birth of the circum-mediterranean orogeny as reflected by source-to-sink relations

Salvatore Critelli, Manuel Martin-Martin

Summary: A wide region along the western and central Circum-Mediterranean margins has experienced extensive tectonism from the Mesozoic to the Cenozoic. This region has a significant sedimentary record related to the fragmentation of the Pangean supercontinent and the subsequent formation of the CM orogeny. The composition and stratigraphic relations of sediments reflect the progressive destruction of the Neotethyan Ocean and plate convergence between major plates, as well as the deposition from various source rocks during the evolving geo-puzzle terranes of the CM orogeny.
