Land consolidation is the most effective land management approach to optimize land-use structure and improve the natural environment. This study aims to shed light on land consolidation planning processes in China, and to highlight the characteristics and contents of thematic maps in provincial-level planning. The study area, Hubei Province, has an area of 1,85,900km(2) and is located in Central China. The land consolidation potential, that is, the net increase area of arable land was calculated according to the land consolidation types in each county. The spatial characteristics of land consolidation potential, key areas, and key engineering and projects were presented on a scale of 1: 5,00,000 utilizing counties as evaluation units. The thematic maps can provide important information for policymakers and planning workers, and guide any subsequent land consolidation planning at the county level in China.

Comparing Two Different Development Methods of External Parameter Orthogonalization for Estimating Organic Carbon from Field-Moist Intact Soils by Reflectance Spectroscopy

Wu Yu, Yongsheng Hong, Songchao Chen, Yiyun Chen, Lianqing Zhou

Summary: Visible and near-infrared (Vis-NIR) spectroscopy can provide a rapid and inexpensive estimation for soil organic carbon (SOC), but external environmental factors can affect the accuracy of the model. The external parameter orthogonalization (EPO) algorithm was investigated to eliminate interference from external parameters, with moisture being the most significant factor. The study showed that different EPO development methods can balance model performance and cost effectively.

On the urban compactness to ecosystem services in a rapidly urbanising metropolitan area: Highlighting scale effects and spatial non-stationary

Peiheng Yu, Shujin Zhang, Esther H. K. Yung, Edwin H. W. Chan, Bo Luan, Yiyun Chen

Summary: Understanding the impact of urban compactness on ecosystem services is important for sustainable spatial planning. This study explored the effects of urban compactness on four ecosystem services in the Wuhan metropolitan area in China. The results showed that urban compactness has a negative correlation with food production, carbon storage, and habitat quality, but a positive correlation with recreation service. The geographically weighted regression model effectively identified spatial heterogeneity, while the multiscale geographically weighted regression model revealed local relationships and spatially non-stationary associations. The contributions of different urban compactness factors to ecosystem services varied considerably.

The Spatial Effect of Accessibility to Public Service Facilities on Housing Prices: Highlighting the Housing Equity

Peiheng Yu, Esther H. K. Yung, Edwin H. W. Chan, Shujin Zhang, Siqiang Wang, Yiyun Chen

Summary: This study investigates the spatial effect of public service accessibility on housing prices and proposes a new methodological framework to understand housing equity issues. The results show that public service facilities have a capitalisation effect on housing prices, and larger facilities have a more significant clustering effect. The spatial association detector model has a greater explanatory power than the geographical detector model and can identify the driving factors of housing prices. This study provides valuable insights for urban environmental planning and local real estate planning.

Mapping Soil Organic Carbon in Floodplain Farmland: Implications of Effective Range of Environmental Variables

Zihao Wu, Yiyun Chen, Yuanli Zhu, Xiangyang Feng, Jianxiong Ou, Guie Li, Zhaomin Tong, Qingwu Yan

Summary: Accurately mapping soil organic carbon (SOC) is important for evaluating carbon storage and soil quality, but the high spatial heterogeneity and non-linear relationship with covariates in floodplain farmland pose challenges to digital soil mapping. This study used samples from a town near Han River to determine the main factors controlling SOC and reveal their effective ranges, and employed the gradient boosting decision tree (GBDT) model and partial dependence plots for SOC mapping. The results showed that GBDT outperformed linear regression, with the distance from the river identified as the most important factor. Furthermore, the study highlighted the effective ranges of various environmental variables and their impact on SOC. These findings contribute to understanding SOC spatial patterns, carbon sequestration, and precision agriculture.

Yongsheng Hong, Songchao Chen, Bifeng Hu, Nan Wang, Jie Xue, Zhiqing Zhuo, Yuanyuan Yang, Yiyun Chen, Jie Peng, Yaolin Liu, Abdul Mounem Mouazen, Zhou Shi

Summary: Visible-to-near-infrared (vis-NIR) and mid-infrared (MIR) spectroscopy are widely used to estimate soil organic carbon (SOC). The fusion of vis-NIR and MIR data can provide accurate prediction for SOC as the individual sensor range may lack important features. Six data fusion strategies were compared, with PI-CNN achieving the best accuracy (validation R2 = 0.84) for SOC estimation. The better performance of PI-CNN over DC-CNN demonstrates the necessity of using different kernel sizes in the CNN network for fusing vis-NIR and MIR spectral data. The deep-learning fusion method based on PI-CNN is an efficient tool for integrating data from multiple sensors in soil spectral modeling.

Spatial Vertical Equity in Public General Hospitals: Towards a Sustainable Healthcare System

Peiheng Yu, Izzy Yi Jian, Esther H. K. Yung, Edwin H. W. Chan, Man Sing Wong, Yiyun Chen

Summary: The accessibility of public general hospitals and spatial vertical equity are not well understood in developing countries. This study proposes a theoretical framework to investigate the accessibility of public general hospitals and spatial vertical equity based on demographic dimensions. The results show significant spatial heterogeneity in hospital accessibility and suggest that the spatial distribution of hospitals does not consider communities with a high proportion of minors and seniors. Minors face greater inequities in healthcare access compared to seniors. These findings have important policy implications for creating a more equitable urban form and sustainable healthcare system.

Automatic Crop Classification Based on Optimized Spectral and Textural Indexes Considering Spatial Heterogeneity

Xiaomi Wang, Jiuhong Liu, Peng Peng, Yiyun Chen, Shan He, Kang Yang

Summary: This study proposes an automatic crop classification strategy (ACCSH) that combines the geographic detector technique, random forest average accuracy model, and random forest classification model to automatically realize large-scale crop classification with high accuracy. By calculating spectral and textural indexes to quantify crop growth characteristics and environmental variables, an adaptive spatial heterogeneity mining method is used to identify spatial homogeneous zones with significant differentiation of crop growth characteristics. Classification indexes are then optimized independently within each zone based on correlation analysis and random forest average accuracy. Random forest is used to classify the target crop in each zone separately. The ACCSH is applied to wheat and corn classification in northern France, and the results show improved accuracy compared to global-scale classifications. The index optimization strategy in ACCSH also demonstrates superiority over non-optimized indexes.
