Summary: Low back pain encompasses various types of pain, with diagnostic and therapeutic methods controversial, requiring a comprehensive approach considering biological, psychological, and social factors. Improvement in diagnostic accuracy, treatment algorithms, and multimodal interdisciplinary treatment are essential.

Summary: Higher levels of pain-related fear, catastrophizing, and depression are significantly associated with reduced spinal movement amplitudes and increased muscle activity in low back pain patients. Pain intensity has a minimal independent association with spinal motor behavior, and the small effect sizes found in the meta-analyses question the role of psychological factors as major causes of spinal movement avoidance.

Summary: This study investigated the relationship between psychosocial factors and severe low back pain and functional limitations. The results showed that catastrophising symptoms, maladaptive beliefs about rest, kinesiophobia, and social isolation were associated with severe pain and functional limitations.

Summary: This study aims to describe patterns in the evaluation, treatment, and outcomes of patients presenting to an urban, academic emergency department (ED) for atraumatic low back pain (LBP). The results show that patients receiving ED care for LBP had a significant improvement in physical function and mobility scores at 6 weeks, but their return to function continued to lag behind. There were variations in imaging patterns, medication prescriptions, and outpatient follow-up, highlighting the need for clear guidelines and treatment pathways for ED patients with LBP.

Summary: Using Mendelian Randomization (MR) method, this study found a causal link between heavy manual or physical work and increased risk of low back pain (LBP), but no significant associations were found between prolonged walking/standing at work, job satisfaction, and LBP.

Summary: The study found that the pressure pain threshold and thoracolumbar angle were associated with low-intensity back pain in female subjects. In male subjects, low-intensity back pain was associated with torso angle, lumbosacral spine angle, and BMI.

Summary: Prompt and appropriate treatment of chronic low back pain is crucial for preventing disability and reducing healthcare costs. The concept of functionality in chronic pain management is still lacking a shared definition, leading to different opinions among specialists and patients. Although there are instruments available for assessing functionality, there is no consistency in their use.

Summary: This study evaluated the factors associated with changes in functional dyspepsia (FD) symptom severity. The results showed that improvement in anxiety, lower baseline sleep disturbance, absence of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), and higher baseline FD severity were associated with improvement in FD symptom severity.

Summary: Low back pain (LBP) is a common cause of pain and disability, but current treatments often fail to provide sufficient relief. Identifying reliable biomarkers associated with LBP, such as epigenetic factors, could improve clinical practice. This review examined the literature on epigenetic factors and found promising markers that could significantly impact disease management and treatment.

Summary: This study investigated the prevalence of low back pain and identified subject-specific factors associated with low back pain in a Japanese community-dwelling older adult population. The results showed that the prevalence of low back pain tended to increase with age, and there were similar findings between genders. Multivariate analysis revealed that pelvic incidence minus lumbar lordosis (PI-LL) mismatch was a significant independent factor associated with low back pain.

Summary: This study evaluated the differences in pain, dysfunction, and psychological factors between non-specific low back pain patients with and without anxiety. The results showed significant differences in pain intensity, disability, and psychological function between the two groups. Anxiety scores were positively correlated with functional disability and psychological function, and negatively correlated with quality of sleep and quality of life.

Summary: This study compared socio-demographic, health, lifestyle, and psychological factors in individuals with and without chronic low back pain (CLBP) and correlated them with clinical outcomes in CLBP patients. The study found that CLBP was associated with female gender, older age, higher levels of sleep complaints and depressive symptoms. The combination of moderate to severe depressive symptoms with obstructive sleep apnea or insomnia symptoms was the most important predictive factor for functional disability in CLBP patients.

Summary: The study investigated how load expectations modulate neuromuscular and postural strategies in individuals with and without chronic low back pain during a freestyle lifting task. Load expectations affected time to maximal knee flexion in both groups, with differences in hip and lumbar flexion based on load expectations and group. Results showed differences in erector spinae electromyography activity between lighter and heavier load expectations, but force plate analyses did not reveal significant effects. The findings suggest that load expectations influence movement strategies and muscle activation differently in participants with chronic low back pain compared to healthy adults.

Summary: Exercise is recommended for chronic low back pain (CLBP), but its mechanisms are not well understood. This study compared the exercise-induced hypoalgesia (EIH) levels between participants with and without CLBP and explored the associations with psychological factors and symptoms of central sensitization. The results showed that the CLBP group had lower EIH following wrist exercise, but it was not correlated with psychological factors or central sensitization symptoms.
