Summary: This study proposes a scalable silicon-based mode-order conversion scheme that can efficiently convert the mode-order from fundamental TE mode to various higher-order TE modes in a short conversion length. The proposed scheme achieves high mode conversion efficiency, wide working bandwidths, and detailed fabrication tolerances.

Summary: A low loss optical interconnection between optical fibers and photonic integrated circuits is crucial for achieving high performance in photonic systems. Various approaches including spot size converters, subwavelength waveguide grating structures, and different refractive index materials have been used in the past decade to enable efficient coupling between fiber and photonic chips. However, achieving low-loss coupling with high index contrast waveguides like SiN and SMF-28 fibers remains challenging. In this study, we present a multilayer edge-coupler using SiOxN materials with different indices to achieve efficient edge coupling between SMF-28 fiber and SiN single mode waveguides. Theoretical results show a coupling loss of 0.068 dB for the TM mode at a wavelength of 1550 nm, with a 1 dB alignment tolerance offset of 2.4 μm.

Summary: A silicon-based TE0-to-TM1 mode-order converter has been proposed, which significantly reduces the mode conversion length to 3.5 micrometers through optimized metal layer design and the introduction of metal plasmonic effect. The mode-order converter exhibits excellent performance at a wavelength of 1.55 micrometers.

Summary: This paper proposes a CMOS-compatible, broadband, and polarization-independent edge coupler for efficient chip coupling with standard single-mode fiber. By using a three-layer silicon nitride waveguide array with the same structures in the top oxide cladding of the chip, high coupling efficiency and simplified mode transformation structure can be achieved. The structure has the potential to reduce the packaging cost of silicon photonic chips and can be used for on-chip three-dimensional photonic integrations or fiber-to-chip, chip-to-chip optical interconnections.

Summary: This article introduces a 6-port dual-polarization (DP) optical unitary processor (OUP) with polarization-splitter-rotators, implemented on a compact silicon photonic chip based on the multi-plane light conversion (MPLC) concept. It demonstrates all-optical MIMO demultiplexing of a 300-Gbps 3-mode DP quadrature phase-shift-keying (QPSK) signal at 1540, 1550, and 1560-nm wavelengths with an energy consumption of approximately 1.5 pJ/bit. All-optical MIMO is transparent to signal format and the energy cost decreases with increasing baudrate, making it an attractive approach for reducing power consumption in future ultra-high-capacity MDM systems.

Summary: Researchers have found that in magneto-optic InAs, the application of an in-plane magnetic field modifies the permittivity tensor, leading to an enhanced spectral directional emissivity and decreased absorptivity, ultimately violating Kirchhoff's law of thermal radiation.

Summary: By harnessing optical loss in a coupled high-Q resonators system, on-chip electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) can be achieved, leading to fast and nonvolatile responses. This mechanism, demonstrated experimentally on chalcogenide coupled microring resonators in a monolithically integrated chip, provides a new perspective for tunable photonic devices.

Summary: This article demonstrates a symmetric directional coupler with a large fabrication tolerance on thin-film lithium niobate. The principle is based on compensating for the opposite trend of width and gap fabrication errors through beat length compensation. The tolerance is greater than +/- 100 nm for an optimized structure. The experimental results validate the simulated ones. The principle can be applied to DC-based devices, such as 3-dB couplers and waveguide array couplers, with a high yield.

Summary: A new design of spot size converter (SSC) integrating the graded index (GRIN) waveguide with the 2-D inversely-tapered waveguide has been proposed to couple light beam between cleaved single-mode fiber (SMF) and silicon wire waveguide on silicon-on-insulator (SOI) platform. The device shows low coupling loss of 0.27 dB with cleaved SMF, polarization-dependent loss (PDL) below 0.25 dB, and 1-dB alignment tolerance of around 2.0 to 2.0 μm for both vertical and horizontal directions. The starting tip width of the tapered waveguide is kept within the lithography limitation at current commercial silicon photonics fab. This integrated SSC design could effectively reduce coupling loss between cleaved SMF and Si waveguide.

Summary: We report on the design, fabrication, and characterization of a Silicon Nitride (SiN)-based integrated photonic chip in which the dielectric waveguides are coupled to photodetectors integrated homogeneously into the Silicon substrate. The photonic-electronic coupling was realized by a 3D inverse tapering of SiN waveguides.
