The indicator aggregate carbon intensity, such as that given by the ratio of a country's CO2 emissions to its GDP, is often used by researchers and policymakers in the study of climate change or environmental performance. A better understanding of the determinants of this indicator is useful in climate policy analysis. This paper introduces four different models to calculate a country's aggregate carbon intensity using the input output framework. The models are developed based on different combinations of input output models, country imports assumptions, and approaches to calculating GDP. Using the four models and multiplicative structural decomposition analysis, the determinants of the aggregate carbon intensity change of China from 2007 to 2010 are studied. The results given by the models are compared and attribution analysis on one of the determinants is conducted. The proposed procedure can be similarly applied to study changes in other aggregate intensity indicators, such as the ratio of energy consumption, water consumption or material use of a country to its GDP. Assessing factors driving international trade in natural resources 1995-2018

Sheng Zhong, Bin Su

Summary: This paper uses a unified gravity model framework and focuses on various policy measures to analyze the determinants of natural resource flows. The results show that open trade policy is a key factor in increasing resource exports, while improving resource efficiency reduces exports. In addition, environmental policies also play a role. These findings can help policymakers better manage the trade-offs between economic growth, resource security, and environmental consequences.

Contributions of cleaner production and end-of-pipe treatment to NOx emissions and intensity reductions in China, 1997-2018

Guoxing Zhang, Jilei Han, Bin Su

Summary: The Chinese experience in economic development and environmental protection serves as an important reference for other developing countries. However, there is a lack of studies examining the changes in nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions and intensity in China. This study analyzes the socioeconomic factors and patterns behind the changes in NOx emissions and intensity, considering cleaner production and end-of-pipe treatments. The results show that the construction industry contributes the most to NOx emissions and intensity, followed by transportation. The reduction in emission intensity, achieved through end-of-pipe treatments and energy efficiency improvements, is the primary driver of NOx emissions and intensity reduction. The study also identifies the construction and building materials industry, transportation, and other services industry as critical sectors for future NOx reduction. The findings provide policy implications and recommendations for future developments.

How do imports change the energy consumption of China? An analysis of its role in intermediate inputs and final demands

Ya-Fang Sun, Shiwei Yu, Yue-Jun Zhang, Bin Su

Summary: A study finds that the imports dependency of China has decreased from 27% to 14% between 2007 and 2020, but its impact on the embodied energy consumption in final demands remains unresolved. By employing environmentally extended input-output analysis and structural decomposition analysis, this research explores the effects of import changes. At the national level, the input imports effect contributes about 15% to the growth of embodied energy consumption, while the demand imports effect contributes no more than 5%. At the sectoral level, the input imports effect occurs mainly through the metals sector from the supply side, but mainly through the electrical and optical equipment sector from the demand side. The study also identifies critical supply chains that can facilitate the input imports effect, and highlights the sectors through which the demand imports effect primarily occurs.

The nexus between electricity consumption, carbon dioxide emissions, and economic growth in Sudan (1971-2019)

Ibrahim Ahmed Eldowma, Guoxing Zhang, Bin Su

Summary: Electricity access in Sudan is a major challenge for economic development due to rapid population growth and climate variabilities. This study explores the relationship between electricity consumption, carbon dioxide emissions, total population, and economic growth from 1971 to 2019. The findings reveal that despite Sudan's abundant energy resources, it has failed to provide sufficient electricity for economic development and population demand. The study emphasizes the need for policy reforms to ensure affordable electricity access and environmentally-friendly development.

Multiregional input-output analysis of carbon transfer in interprovincial trade and sectoral strategies for mitigation: Case study of Shanxi province in China

Wei Li, Qi Wang, Baihui Jin, Guomin Li, Bin Su

Summary: This study used a multiregional input-output (MRIO) model and structural decomposition analysis (SDA) to examine the spatiotemporal evolution and driving forces of embodied carbon emissions in Shanxi Province, China. The study revealed that Shanxi had significant net embodied carbon outflow in interprovincial trade, driven by technological level and trade demand. The highest contributors to net embodied carbon outflow were electricity and heat production and supply, metal smelting and rolling processing, and petroleum processing, coking, and nuclear fuel processing. The study provides insights for formulating carbon reduction policies in energy-rich regions.

Summary: The construction industry is crucial for global economic development and has a significant impact on global energy consumption. Energy conservation is essential for sustainable development worldwide. This paper analyzes the reasons behind the industry's high energy consumption based on the perspective of embodied energy intensity (EEI) in the global construction sector. The study utilizes a multi-regional structural path analysis model to explore the path of EEI in the industry, showing that the second layer is the main path and the higher layers play an increasingly critical role.

The Impact of Green Technology Research and Development (R & amp;D) Investment on Performance: A Case Study of Listed Energy Companies in Beijing, China

Piaopeng Song, Yuxiao Gu, Bin Su, Arifa Tanveer, Qiao Peng, Weijun Gao, Shaomin Wu, Shihong Zeng

Summary: The aim of this study is to explore the relationship between green technology R&D investment and corporate performance, using a threshold regression model on 44 Beijing-listed energy companies from 2016 to 2021. The results indicate an inverse W-shaped nonlinear relationship between green technology R&D investment and firm performance, suggesting a positive effect within an appropriate investment interval and a negative effect outside this interval. The study also examines the impact of three threshold variables (firm size, capital structure, and capital density) on this relationship, finding optimal intervals for each variable. Furthermore, the study reveals a lagged effect of green technology R&D investment intensity on firm performance, with the positive influence weakening over time and the negative influence becoming more prominent.

Structural decomposition analysis applied to energy and emissions: Frameworks for monthly data

Bin Su, B. W. Ang

Summary: Structural decomposition analysis (SDA) is a well-known approach for studying the factors contributing to changes in aggregate indicators in energy and emissions studies. This paper proposes an additive SDA framework and a multiplicative SDA framework that incorporate monthly data to reveal the drivers of temporal dynamics in energy/emissions embodiments and aggregate embodied intensity indicators. An empirical study conducted using China's 2018 and 2020 input-output tables shows that the increased granularity of data helps reveal temporal dynamics mechanisms that would otherwise be overlooked.

Temperature change and daily urban-rural residential electricity consumption in northwestern China: Responsiveness and inequality

Guoxing Zhang, Lin Shen, Bin Su

Summary: This paper examines the response of urban and rural residents in a China's northwestern province to temperature changes in terms of electricity consumption, and uncovers its impact on daily electricity consumption inequality between these two groups. The study findings show that the urban response function exhibits a U-shaped distribution, while that of rural residents demonstrates a fluctuating upward trend. When the daily mean temperature falls below 24°C, the gap between urban and rural electricity consumption increases. During the Spring Festival, the negative effects of extremely low temperatures will be reduced, while at the end of October, they will be increased.
