Vessel rupture and perforation are important complications of percutaneous treatment of coronary and peripheral arterial disease. These complications can result in abrupt vessel closure, distal organ injury, bleeding into the surrounding tissue, and death. Prompt management of such complications is therefore critically important. This paper reviews the management of vessel rupture and perforation, including the use of different types of covered stents (balloon-expandable and self-expanding), as well as the various types of embolization coils. Particular focus will be placed on percutaneous coronary artery and peripheral arterial interventions.

Impact of type 2 diabetes and microvascular complications on mortality and cardiovascular outcomes in a multiethnic Asian population

Summary: Diabetes mellitus is a significant predictor of mortality and cardiovascular morbidity in Asian patients without prior cardiovascular disease. Among patients with type 2 diabetes, poorer glycemic control is associated with increased major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE) but not mortality rates. A greater burden of microvascular complications identifies a subset of patients with poorer outcomes.

Impact of COVID-19 pandemic early response measures on myocardial infarctions and acute cardiac care in Singapore

Shan Yin Audry Lee, Poay Huan Loh, Yee How Lau, Yilin Jiang, Boon Wah Liew, Patrick Zhan Yun Lim, Saurabh Rastogi, Wei Chieh Jack Tan, Hee Hwa Ho, Khung Keong Yeo

Summary: The COVID-19 pandemic had an impact on AMI attendances, STEMI treatments, and outcomes. Data from PPCI-capable healthcare centres in Singapore showed a decrease in weekly elective PCI cases, while STEMI and PPCI rates remained stable. NSTEMI rates decreased during the pandemic. Data suggests that previous experience with SARS helped in maintaining essential services during acute healthcare resource strain. However, increased pandemic preparedness measures must be explored to ensure AMI care is not adversely affected in the future.

Summary: The COVID-19 pandemic has led to increased interest and demand for telehealth services across the 50 most affected countries. Some countries show a correlation between the increase in relative search volumes (RSV) for telehealth and their level of information and communications technology (ICT) infrastructure, while others demonstrate a greater demand for telehealth services than what their current ICT infrastructure can support.
