Summary: Among the oldest-old individuals in China, sleep duration exceeding 12 hours may be associated with an increased risk of activities of daily living (ADL) disability, and the optimal sleep duration for this population could be 8-10 hours.

Summary: The aim of this study was to investigate the positive effects of drinking herbal tea and tea on activities of daily living (ADL) in the elderly. The study used data from the Chinese longitudinal healthy longevity survey (CLHLS) and divided the participants into three groups based on their frequency of consuming herbal tea and tea. The results showed that frequent consumption of herbal tea could effectively reduce the incidence of ADL disability, while the effect of tea drinking was relatively weaker.

Summary: The study classified elderly individuals in China into three distinct classes based on their combined BADL/IADL, finding associations between age, living status, health conditions, and different ADL classes. Additionally, there was a U-shaped association between age and BMI with BADL/IADL disability.

Summary: A Swedish study compared the ADL/IADL disability rates of three 85-year-old birth cohorts born three decades apart, finding that later born cohorts had lower disability rates. Although factors associated with disability varied between cohorts, dementia and depression increased the odds of disability across all cohorts.

Summary: This study found that multimorbidity increased the likelihood of developing activities of daily living (ADL) disability in middle-aged and older women, partially through the mediation of depressive symptoms. The results emphasize the importance of focusing on mental wellness in females with multimorbidity to prevent impairments in physical function.

Summary: This study investigates the activity of daily living (ADL) situation among older adults in China and explores the relationship between health behavior and ADL. The findings demonstrate that age, residence, chronic disease, exercise, and physical examination are significantly associated with ADL among older adults in Southwest China. The study highlights the importance of exercise as a protective factor for older adults, and emphasizes the need for government and public health institutions to prioritize the health needs of older adults.

Summary: This study investigated the impact of air quality on activities of daily living (ADL) disability by analyzing micro data from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study and urban environmental quality data from 122 cities. The results showed that air quality significantly increased the probability of ADL disability, with a higher effect on moderate and mild disability. The study also found that individuals aged over 60 years, those in the high Gross Domestic Product (GDP) group, females, and those in the nonpilot long-term care insurance group were more affected by air quality. The interaction between air quality and serious illness also played a significant role in ADL disability.

Summary: Specific impairments in numerical functions can have severe consequences in daily life. The Numerical Activities of Daily Living (NADL) is a battery designed to assess numerical abilities, and a shorter version (NADL-Short) was developed for quicker assessment with high accuracy. NADL-Short shows strong correlation with the original battery and can accurately identify impaired performance, making it suitable for diagnosing numerical impairments.

Summary: This study identified a strong association between ADL capacity at discharge and prognosis in elderly patients after cardiac and aortic surgery, with low ADL status being an independent predictor of all-cause mortality and unplanned readmission. A comprehensive approach to improving ADL capacity in elderly patients undergoing these surgeries may lead to better outcomes.

Summary: This longitudinal study investigates the effects of limitations in activities of daily living (ADL) on the incidence of stroke in older Chinese adults. The study finds that older adults with ADL limitations have a 77% higher risk of developing stroke compared to those without ADL limitations after controlling for various confounding factors.

Summary: This study examines the prevalence of Activity of Daily Living (ADL) and Instrumental Activity of Daily Living (IADL) among elderly individuals in India and identifies determinants of ADL and IADL disability. The findings suggest that lack of physical activity is associated with severe levels of disability. The study highlights the importance of establishing geriatric care centers and implementing community interventions to promote physical activity among the elderly.

Summary: Assessing activities of daily living (ADL) is crucial for monitoring disease progression and optimizing care in Parkinson's disease (PD). This systematic review identified and critically appraised various measurement instruments used to assess ADL in PD. Only a few instruments were classified as recommended, with the Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale (UPDRS) and the Schwab & England ADL scale (S&E scale) being the most frequently cited. Future studies should explore the use of wearable devices for remote and continuous ADL assessment.

Summary: This study aimed to examine the influence of changes in exercise status, nutritional status, and a number of comorbidities on functional ability in Taiwanese community-dwelling older adults. The results revealed that current exercise and consistent exercise were negatively associated with subsequent decline in activities of daily living (ADL) and instrumental activities of daily living (IADL). The Mini-Nutritional Assessment (MNA) score was negatively associated with subsequent decline in IADL, while the number of diseases was positively associated with subsequent decline in IADL. Consistency of exercise, MNA score, and the number of chronic diseases are good predictors of decline in IADL.

Summary: This study investigated gender differences in vision and hearing impairments with Activities of Daily Living (ADL) disability among older adults in Malaysia. The results showed significant associations between vision and hearing impairments with ADL disability, with higher prevalence in females.
