The adsorptive potential of De-Acidite FF-IP resin for the removal of nitrate (NO3-) from synthetic as well as commercially available bottled water samples was testified. Ultra-performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (UPLC-MS) was utilized for detection and determination of NO3-. Optimum NO3- adsorption was observed at pH range 2 to 6. Kinetic studies revealed the applicability of pseudo-first-order kinetic model for analyzed concentration range (100-300 mg/L) while, the equilibration time (25 min) was independent of initial NO3- concentration. The breakthrough capacities in Milli-Q and tap water were 35 and 30 mg/g, respectively. (C) 2013 The Korean Society of Industrial and Engineering Chemistry. Published by Elsevier B.V. Thermocatalytic conversion of wood-plastic composite over HZSM-5 catalysts

Jihyeon Seo, Hyunjin Kim, Sugyeong Jeon, Soheil Valizadeh, Yasin Khani, Byong-Hun Jeon, Gwang Hoon Rhee, Wei-Hsin Chen, Shiung Lam, Moonis Ali Khan, Young-Kwon Park

Summary: Air gasification of Wood-Plastic Composite (WPC) using Ni-loaded HZSM-5 catalysts resulted in H2-rich gas. The catalytic activity was adversely affected by increasing the SiO2/Al2O3 ratio (SAR) of HZSM-5. The highest gas yield and H2 selectivity were obtained using 20%Ni/HZSM-5(30). Reducing SAR led to an increase in acyclic compounds in oil products.

Nurul Izzati Normi, Ahmed Saud Abdulhameed, S. N. Surip, Zeid A. ALOthman, Lee D. Wilson, Ali H. Jawad

Summary: In this study, a novel hydrothermally cross-linked chitosan-benzil (CTS-BZ) was prepared and analyzed for its physicochemical characteristics. The results showed that CTS-BZ has mesoporous and crystalline nature, with successful grafting of the aromatic ring onto the CTS chains. Compared to pristine CTS beads, hydrothermally cross-linked CTS-BZ exhibited higher adsorption capacity for RO16 dye removal.

Summary: In this study, jackfruit peel (JP) and sugarcane bagasse (SB) powder were co-hydrothermally carbonized to improve the properties of JP/SB@4:1 hydrochar for the removal of dyes from aqueous solutions. The adsorption process was influenced by contact time, pH, initial dye concentration, and temperature. Non-linear kinetic and isotherm models were applied to the experimental data, and electrostatic interaction, hydrogen bonding, and pi-pi/n-pi interactions were found to be the main mechanisms of dye adsorption. Thermodynamics evaluation showed the adsorption process to be feasible, spontaneous, and endothermic.

Behzad Murtaza, Aqsa Naseer, Muhammad Imran, Noor S. S. Shah, Abdullah A. A. Al-Kahtani, Zeid A. A. ALOthman, Muhammad Shahid, Jibran Iqbal, Ghulam Abbas, Natasha Natasha, Muhammad Amjad

Summary: Nanocomposites of almond shells biochar (BC) with zerovalent bismuth and/or copper (Bi-0/BC, Cu-0/BC, and Bi-0-Cu-0/BC) were synthesized for efficient removal of Cr from aqueous solution. The synthesized nanocomposites showed high Cr removal efficiency, with Bi-0-Cu-0/BC nano-biocomposites exhibiting the best performance. The prepared nanocomposites effectively removed Cr at low concentrations and acidic pH levels, and Bi-0-Cu-0/BC showed greater stability and reusability.

Effect of freshwater and wastewater irrigation on buildup of toxic elements in soil and maize crop

Muhammad Shahid, Abdullah A. Al-Kahtani, Zeid A. ALOthman, Irshad Bibi, Tasveer Zahra Tariq, Natasha Natasha, Sana Khalid, Nabeel Khan Niazi, Behzad Murtaza

Summary: Untreated wastewater used in agriculture poses severe ecological risks due to various pollutants. This study examined the effects of mixing freshwater or groundwater with sewage water on soil and maize crop contamination. Results showed high levels of Cd and Cr in sewage water. Mixing freshwater or groundwater with sewage water increased soil content of As and decreased Cd, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb, and Zn compared to sewage water alone. Maize accumulated PTEs in roots and shoots, with potential carcinogenic risks to livestock consuming contaminated fodder. Mixing water sources can be an effective strategy to minimize environmental/health hazards.

Effects of Lycium barbarum on gluten structure, in vitro starch digestibility, and compound noodle quality

Fei Hu, Jin-Yu Li, Peng-Ren Zou, Kiran Thakur, Jian-Guo Zhang, Mohammad Rizwan Khan, Zhao-Jun Wei

Summary: Lycium barbarum pulp (LBP) can improve the performance and structure of gluten proteins, resulting in improved noodle quality. The addition of 5% LBP significantly increases the stability and thermal stability of gluten proteins, and improves the texture, stretchability, and flavor of noodles. Moreover, LBP addition reduces starch digestibility and the expected glycemic index. SEM and AFM analysis show that the bioactive components of LBP can mix with gluten protein, bringing the structure of noodles closer together and intensifying the cross-linking of the gluten structure.
