Summary: IL-37 and IL-33 are newly identified cytokines that play a role in various inflammatory conditions. This review aims to collect and organize data from multiple studies to establish a comprehensive understanding of their role. The studies assessed mainly focused on atopic dermatitis and immunologic pathways. The collective data suggests a pro-inflammatory role for IL-33 and an anti-inflammatory role for IL-37, potentially linked in an IL-33/IL-37 axis. Early results indicate that both cytokines may serve as markers of disease activity.

Summary: This study identifies BEX1 as a novel antiviral protein that plays a cardioprotective role in the heart during viral infection. It regulates cardiac immune responses to limit viral replication and its absence accelerates virus-induced heart failure and pathological remodeling, while its overexpression confers protection.

Summary: The study developed vaccines targeting IL-4 and IL-13, demonstrating promising prophylactic and therapeutic effects in mouse models of asthma. Vaccines specific for human IL-4 and IL-13 also showed efficient neutralization of these cytokines in mice, suggesting a potential long-term therapeutic strategy for allergic asthma.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the anti-inflammatory and immune-modulatory roles of berberine (BBR) in ulcerative colitis (UC) treatment, and to explore the underlying mechanisms. The results showed that BBR suppressed M1 macrophages while promoting M2 macrophages, which contributed to its anti-inflammatory and immune-modulating activities.

Summary: Interleukin-33 (IL-33) is an immune signaling molecule that plays a role in various diseases. It activates different cells to initiate and amplify immune responses and inflammation. IL-33 has multiple regulatory mechanisms to control its activity and function.

Summary: This study demonstrates that keratinocyte-initiated IL-36 responses play a key role in promoting B cell IgE class-switching, leading to the progression of atopic dermatitis to other allergic diseases. The findings suggest that IL-36 responses are a potential therapeutic target against allergic diseases.

Summary: The study showed that active smokers with Allergic Rhinitis do not demonstrate impaired nasal-related quality of life or impact on atopic inflammatory parameters compared to non-smokers. Reduced levels of IL-33 in smokers could explain a lack of symptoms alerting smokers of the harmful consequences of smoking.

Summary: The IL-33/ST2 axis may play a protective role in neutrophil-dominant allergic airway inflammation, and deficiencies in IL-33 and ST2 can lead to excessive production of neutrophilic chemokines, exacerbating the severity of allergic inflammation in the lungs.

Summary: This study generated a new line of IL-1 alpha KO mice using CRISPR-Cas9 technology. Compared to the previous model, this new model showed normal induction and activation of IL-1 beta in macrophages and normal response to multiple innate immune triggers. Furthermore, it was found that IL-1 alpha played a critical role in the expression of the neutrophil chemoattractant KC/CXCL1 independent of IL-1 beta.

Summary: The study demonstrated that S100A4 plays a critical role in regulating mast cell activation and allergic responses. S100A4(-/-) mice showed reduced symptoms in allergic models, indicating that S100A4 is required for mast cell activation and may be involved in the regulation of allergic diseases through this mechanism.

Summary: The survey on undergraduate immunology education found that instructor teaching experience and role played a role in determining the emphasis on certain immunology subtopics. The addition of a lab component increased time allotted to lab-related and clinical topics, while the type of institution did not affect course content.
