Summary: This study retrospectively examined the clinical features of AE episodes prompting a call on the CREAK hotline and found that mast cell induced angioedema patients had a higher history of hives, while ACEi-AAE mainly affected the tongue and larynx. The hotline provided rapid AE expertise and helped educate physicians in the management of angioedema.

Summary: The study evaluated clinical follow-up results of 17 patients with C1-INH-AAE, finding that the patients had an average age of 61 years and 33% of them experienced AE attacks provoked by ACE inhibitors. The majority of patients experienced attacks involving the skin, upper airways, tongue/lip, with most having an underlying condition.

Summary: This study found that COVID-19 patients have higher levels of ACE2 expression and enzymatic activity in their blood compared to healthy individuals, while levels of AngII and Ang-(1-7) are lower. Even when excluding COVID-19 patients under RAS blockade treatment, ACE2 expression and enzymatic activity remain higher in COVID-19 patients, suggesting the involvement of RAS in COVID-19.

Summary: This study investigated the possible association between ACEi/ARB-induced angioedema and HAE genes through molecular genetic screening. The results suggest that HAE-associated mutations are, at best, a rare cause of ACEi/ARB-induced angioedema, and there was no significant association found between ACEi/ARB-induced angioedema and other variants in the investigated genes.

Summary: This study found that oral administration of losartan did not improve the PaO2:FiO(2) ratio at 7 days in hospitalized patients with COVID-19 and acute lung injury. The use of losartan also did not improve secondary clinical outcomes and resulted in fewer vasopressor-free days compared to placebo.

Summary: This study examined the effects of angiotensin receptor blockers (ARBs) and angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors in hospitalized COVID-19 patients, focusing on gender differences. The results showed that ARBs were associated with reduced use of ventilation and vasopressors in male patients, but not in female patients. Additionally, sex-based differences in the renin-angiotensin system (RAS) components may contribute to variations in outcomes and responses to ARBs in COVID-19.

Summary: The study aimed to determine the prevalence of recurrent angioedema in patients with ACEI/ARB-induced bradykinin angioedema after more than 6 months of drug discontinuation. The results showed that 41% of patients still had recurrent angioedema after 6 months. A good response to icatibant and facial localization were predictive for the final diagnosis of ACEI/ARB-induced bradykinin angioedema and mast-cell driven angioedema, respectively.

Summary: A bio-inspired strategy for plasmonic detection of ACE was developed using peptide-mediated assembly of gold nanoparticles, enabling rapid, sensitive, and selective detection of ACE. This biosensor allows naked-eyed readout of ACE detection with great selectivity and high sensitivity. The technique holds great promise as a point-of-care platform for biomedical diagnostics and the food industry.

Summary: This article discusses the pathophysiology of depression and the role of the brain renin-angiotensin system (RAS) in it. It is found that angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors and angiotensin receptor blockers may be effective in the treatment of depression. By regulating serotonin, brain-derived neurotrophic factor, mitochondrial dysfunction, oxidative stress, and neuroinflammation, these drugs can ameliorate the pathophysiology of depression.

Summary: A highly diastereoselective P-Michael addition of chiral aminophosphinic acids to achiral acrylates has been developed, leading to phosphinic dipeptide isosteres in high yields and dr of up to >50:1. The method allows for the diastereoselective preparation of target compounds without the need for chiral auxiliaries or P-chiral substrates. A possible mechanistic explanation involves a domino chirality transfer from the aminophosphinic acid to the P center, amplified by a crucial benzhydryl ester group, and then to the a-carbon.

Summary: The use of ACE inhibitors and ARBs in COVID-19 patients was not associated with increased risk of mortality, severe clinical manifestations, or positive SARS-CoV-2 tests compared to patients not taking these medications. The findings suggest that discontinuation of ACE inhibitors or ARBs in treating COVID-19 patients may not be necessary based on current evidence.

Summary: This study investigated the presence of left ventricular (LV) remodelling after ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) using cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) imaging. The results showed that LV remodelling in the subacute phase may not be detrimental, but rather a compensatory response associated with improved LV ejection fraction (EF) at follow-up. However, LV remodelling accompanied by an increase in end-systolic volume index (LV-REMESV) was associated with a decrease in LV-EF, driven by the infarct size.

Summary: This study evaluated the prevalence of hypertension in a group of obese children and adolescents and its association with anthropometric and glycometabolic indices. The results showed that the incidence of hypertension was high in obese patients identified by office blood pressure measurement and ambulatory blood pressure monitoring. Summary: Sacubitril/Valsartan (S/V) has potential anti-remodeling effects and improves right ventricular (RV) coupling to the pulmonary circulation. This study found that 27.6% of HFrEF patients experienced left ventricular (LV) reverse remodeling and there was a significant improvement in RV function. These findings suggest a potential long-term reverse global remodeling effect of S/V and highlight a possible direct effect of the drug on the interaction between RV and pulmonary circulation.

Summary: Oral anticoagulant therapy in cancer patients with atrial fibrillation can reduce the risk of ischemic, hemorrhagic, and venous thromboembolic events, but there is a certain bleeding risk, lower than warfarin but higher than non-cancer patients. Summary: Stress echocardiography and coronary computed tomography angiography can detect coronary artery disease in end-stage liver disease patients without previous evidence of heart disease. The prevalence of CAD is low in high-risk end-stage liver disease patients, and screening helps reduce the incidence of post-liver transplantation acute coronary events without impacting mid-term survival.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate whether fasting serum proprotein convertase subtilisin/kexin type 9 (PCSK9) levels could serve as prognostic biomarkers for cardiovascular events and all-cause mortality in patients with diabetes. The study found that PCSK9 levels were higher in women compared to men, and even higher in the presence of complications such as diabetic kidney disease. PCSK9 was positively correlated with markers of blood glucose homeostasis and atherogenic lipid profile. Serum PCSK9 levels predicted new-onset major adverse cardiovascular events only in women and all-cause mortality only in men.

Summary: Antecubital access for right heart catheterization (RHC) has advantages over proximal vein access, including shorter fluoroscopy time, reduced radiation dose, and fewer guidewires used. A retrospective study of patients who underwent RHC showed that antecubital access resulted in lower fluoroscopy time (6 vs. 3 min) and radiation exposure (61 vs. 30 cGy/m(2)). The number of patients requiring guidewires was also lower in the antecubital access group (55% vs. 43%).
