Summary: The palladium-catalyzed cyclotrimerization of ortho-silylaryl triflates is a well-established method for synthesizing polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons with triphenylene cores. In the reaction of pyrene with o-silylaryl triflates, higher homologues with eight- and ten-membered rings were unexpectedly formed along with the trimer, and a protocol was developed to isolate all members of this series. This novel class of PAHs was thoroughly investigated using various techniques, including X-ray diffraction, UV/Vis and fluorescence spectroscopy, and theoretical calculations. A mechanistic proposal for the formation of all higher cyclooligomers was supported by density functional theory (DFT) calculations.

Summary: Although the association between single PAHs exposure and telomere length has been studied, the relationship between mixed PAHs exposure and telomere length in the general population is still uncertain. This study analyzed 8 PAHs and their correlation with telomere length, finding that mixed PAHs exposure was negatively associated with telomere length. Specifically, 2-napthol and 2-fluorene concentrations showed a significant negative correlation with telomere length. These findings indicate that PAHs may have a negative impact on telomere length in the general population.

Summary: Oilfield-produced water (OPW) contains a complex mixture of toxic organic and inorganic compounds, including refractory polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and polyaromatic hydrocarbons such as BTEX, which have become a global concern. The treatment of OPW is challenging due to the presence of harmful pollutants combined with oil and the generation of recalcitrant by-products. This article critically reviews the feasibility of heterogeneous photocatalysis for OPW treatment, presents the nature and health implications of these compounds, and evaluates pilot and commercial-scale applications of photocatalysis in water treatment.

Summary: This study investigated aromatic hydrocarbons in the late Miocene-early Pliocene strata of the Yinggehai Basin in the South China Sea. Summary: This study examines the effects of biochar derived from sewage sludge (BCSSL) or sewage sludge/biomass (BCSSLW) on the persistence and bioavailability of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in soils with different properties. The results show that the content of organic solvent extractable PAHs decreases when biochar is applied to the soils, depending on pH and feedstock. Similarly, the content of freely dissolved PAHs also decreases. The bioavailability and persistence of PAHs in the biochar-amended soils are closely related to the chemical properties of the soils, as indicated by the significant relationships between PAH content and pH, cation exchange capacity, available nutrients, and dissolved organic carbon.

Summary: Aquatic ecosystems under anthropic pressures, such as in the city of Montpellier, face challenges of antimicrobial resistance due to strong demographic pressures. The study utilized a method combining cultural and molecular approaches to explore antimicrobial resistance, revealing a significant increase in cultivable bacterial community, fecal bacteria from human origin, and prevalence of beta-lactamases and extended-spectrum beta-lactamases encoding-genes in urban rivers. Urban rivers in developed areas are shown to contribute to the dissemination of antimicrobial resistance, highlighting the importance of considering these environments as reservoirs for resistant bacteria.

Summary: This study developed a N-cycling model for lowland rural rivers covered by macrophytes and investigated the N imports, exports, and response to sediment dredging. The findings showed a considerable N retention ability in the study river, with significant N imports from connected rivers and surrounding polders. Sediment dredging increased particulate nitrogen resuspension and settling rates, while decreasing ammonia nitrogen release, denitrification, and macrophyte uptake rates.

Summary: High-resolution climate data is crucial for predicting regional climate and water environment changes. In this study, a two-step downscaling method was developed to enhance the spatial resolution of GCM data and improve the accuracy for small basins. The method combined medium-resolution climate data with high-resolution topographic data to capture spatial and temporal details. The downscaled climate data were then used to simulate the impacts of climate change on hydrology and water quality in a small basin. The results demonstrated the effectiveness of the downscaling method for spatially differentiated simulations.

The Indian monsoon, the westerlies, and local circulations are the main systems affecting precipitation over the entire Tibetan Plateau. The East Asian summer monsoon primarily affects the eastern Tibetan Plateau. The Indian monsoon has the greatest influence on precipitation in the southern and central grid cells, while the westerlies have the greatest influence on precipitation in the northern and western grid cells. Local circulations have the strongest influence on the central and eastern grid cells.
