Summary: Human trichuriasis is a neglected tropical disease that affects millions worldwide, with non-human primates serving as important reservoirs for zoonotic infections. Studies have shown that whipworm parasites infect a range of NHP species, including colobus monkeys, macaques, baboons, and chimpanzees. Molecular research has revealed different species of Trichuris in humans and NHP, leading to a better understanding of the complex populations of these parasites and their transmission routes among primate hosts.

Summary: S. suis isolates from human infections in Thailand showed susceptibility to cefepime and ceftriaxone, but high resistance to tetracycline, clindamycin, erythromycin, and azithromycin. Macrolide- and tetracycline-resistant isolates had predominant resistance genes tet(O) and ermB. Penicillin-intermediate resistance isolates mainly belonged to serotype 2-ST233. Analysis of PBP protein sequences revealed multiple amino acid substitutions in non-penicillin-susceptible isolates.

Summary: This study investigated the prevalence of Brucella suis in domestic pigs slaughtered in El-Basatin abattoir in Cairo, Egypt. It found that 1.3% of the examined pigs were infected with B. suis, with all isolates identified as B. suis biovar 2. Additionally, high-risk practices were observed among abattoir workers. This is the first isolation of B. suis biovar 2 in Egypt.

Summary: This study investigated the epidemiological and molecular characteristics of 96 S. suis isolates from 10 different provinces of China from 2008 to 2019. A subset of these isolates (10) carried ICEs that were able to be horizontally transferred among isolates of different S. suis serotypes. A mouse thigh infection model revealed that ICE-facilitated ARG transfer promoted resistance development. Continuous monitoring of S. suis, especially for the presence of ICEs and associated ARGs that can be transferred via conjugation, is therefore required.

Summary: In vitro models of the gut-microbiome axis are important for research purposes. Traditional intestinal monolayers lack key biological components for host-microbe interactions. This study develops a 3D in vitro model with immune cells that can survive in culture for over 3 weeks to investigate host-microbe and host-microbe-parasite interactions. The presence of commensal bacteria induces functional and morphological changes in the intestinal barrier. These findings demonstrate the robustness of this model for studying the dynamics of host-microbe interactions and provide insights for systems biology studies of pathogens that cannot be maintained in vitro, including parasitic helminths.

Summary: The increasing resistance to anthelmintics has led to the exploration of alternative control strategies for gastrointestinal nematode (GIN) infections. Genetic selection based on differences in susceptibility to GIN infection between and within sheep breeds is a sustainable option. In this study, no significant between-breed differences were found after infection with Teladorsagia circumcincta, but considerable individual variability was observed within breeds. Mucosal IgA levels, globular leukocytes, MHC-II+ cells, and lymph node gene expression were associated with protection against GIN infection.
