Summary: This study prepared polylactide (PLA)/wood flour (WF)/calcium carbonate (CC) composites with different content of poly(maleic anhydride -co- vinyl acetate) (PMAVA). The addition of PMAVA improved the torque balance of PLA/WF/CC composites as shown by the torque-time curves. SEM photographs showed enhanced compatibility and interfacial adhesion between the filler (CC or WF) and PLA after the addition of PMAVA. DSC heating curves indicated that WF and CC had unrelated effects on the crystal of PLA, and the presence of PMAVA decreased the crystal integrity of PLA. The tensile test results demonstrated increased tensile strength and modulus with the addition of PMAVA, and the composite with 0.5 wt% PMAVA showed the best tensile performance. Hydrolysis results indicated that low content of PMAVA in the composite improved its hydrolysis rate.

Summary: An anion exchange membrane of sulfonated poly(styrene-ethylene-butylene-styrene) copolymer (S-SEBS) was prepared using the casting method, and further modified with maleic anhydride (MA) to enhance ionic conducting properties. The modified membranes showed enhanced ionic conductivity with the formation of ion channels, achieving 0.25 S/cm at 100% relative humidity and 72.5% water uptake capacity. The mechanical and chemical properties of the modified SEBS membrane remained robust after modification.

Summary: Developing safe and high-quality theranostic agents for cancer treatment is crucial. In this study, the clinical indocyanine green (ICG) was coupled with biocompatible poly(styrene-alt-maleic anhydride) (PSMAn) to obtain PSMAn-ICG polymer. The self-assembly of its hydrolyzed product in water resulted in ICG-conjugated poly(styrene-alt-maleic acid) nanoparticles (PSMA-ICG NPs). These NPs demonstrated good solubility and stability in aqueous solutions, high photostability, and reduced damage to red blood cells, highlighting the importance of PSMA coupling. Furthermore, the PSMA-ICG NPs showed significant tumor targeting and long-term imaging capabilities, as well as potent photothermal therapy when combined with near-infrared laser irradiation. Overall, this study provides promising phototheranostic agents for clinical applications.

Summary: This study reveals that chronic exposure to PM induces chronic inflammation and development of COPD by dysregulating NAD+ metabolism and subsequent SIRT1 deficiency in pulmonary macrophages. Activation of SIRT1 by resveratrol effectively mitigates PM-induced inflammation and COPD development. Targeting metabolic and epigenetic reprogramming in macrophages induced by PM is a promising strategy for COPD treatment.

Summary: Microplastic contamination in marine ecosystems poses a growing concern due to its trophic transfer and negative effects on marine organisms. This study investigates the transfer and impacts of polystyrene microplastics in an estuarine food chain. The results show that microplastics can be transferred through the food chain, although the transfer rates are low. The exposed organisms exhibit stress responses, suggesting the potential risk of microplastics reaching humans through the food chain.

The results showed that phthalates are still prevalent in the region, and breastfeeding contributes to phthalate intake in infants. However, the levels detected do not pose significant health risks to infants based on dietary exposure. The increasing exposure to certain phthalates calls for further research into their sources and potential risks.
