Summary: This study investigates the impact of heat exposure on the performance of alkali-activated coal fly ashes (AAF). The results show that the mechanical performance varies depending on the exposure temperature and intrinsic properties of the activated ashes. Low-Ca AAFs are found to be more stable compared to high-Ca AAFs. Heat exposure also significantly reduces the thermal conductivity and volumetric specific capacity of all AAFs.

Summary: Considerable amounts of coal fly ash (CFA) are produced annually without proper utilization. Alkali-activated CFA was introduced to prepare ceramics to treat neodymium-contaminated soil, and its effect on the properties of the ceramics was investigated. The alkali activation of CFA led to a desilication reaction and the generation of new phases rich in sodium, enhancing the mechanical properties of the ceramics. The alkali-activated CFA exhibited higher bulk density and homogeneous distribution of Nd ions in the matrix compared to untreated CFA.

Summary: A high-performance adsorbent for phosphate removal, La-FACC, was developed by impregnating lanthanum on a composite material. The adsorption kinetics were well fit by the intra-particle diffusion model and pseudo second-order kinetic model, indicating chemisorption as the main mechanism. The Langmuir isotherm described the adsorption behavior well, showing high capacity and selectivity for phosphate removal under a wide pH range and high ion strength.

Summary: This study explores the feasibility of utilizing lowly-reactive coal gasification fly ash (CGFA) for stabilizing road aggregate bases. Three types of aggregate stabilizers were evaluated, and it was found that ordinary Portland cement (OPC)-CGFA stabilized bases have better mechanical and durability properties. However, the use of hydrated lime (CH)-CGFA resulted in low water stability and freeze-thaw durability. The alkali-activation process can enhance the reaction degree of CGFA and improve the stabilization performance of CH-CGFA.

Summary: The availability of traditional siliceous Class F fly ash is decreasing as countries switch to renewable energy sources. To extend the availability of siliceous fly ash, suppliers are distributing blended coal ashes and incorporating other coal combustion products (CCPs) or natural pozzolans. While the characteristics of these blended fly ashes may differ, they perform well in cement-based mixtures.

Summary: This study reveals that chronic exposure to PM induces chronic inflammation and development of COPD by dysregulating NAD+ metabolism and subsequent SIRT1 deficiency in pulmonary macrophages. Activation of SIRT1 by resveratrol effectively mitigates PM-induced inflammation and COPD development. Targeting metabolic and epigenetic reprogramming in macrophages induced by PM is a promising strategy for COPD treatment.

Summary: Microplastic contamination in marine ecosystems poses a growing concern due to its trophic transfer and negative effects on marine organisms. This study investigates the transfer and impacts of polystyrene microplastics in an estuarine food chain. The results show that microplastics can be transferred through the food chain, although the transfer rates are low. The exposed organisms exhibit stress responses, suggesting the potential risk of microplastics reaching humans through the food chain.
