Surface continuous measurements on black carbon (BC) were performed at Tongyu (44.42 degrees N, 122.87 degrees E) from March to December 2008. Tongyu is an international reference site of semi-arid climate and environment researches, located in a continental semi-arid area of northeastern China. Mass concentrations and potential contributing sources of BC are discussed for the sampling site. Hourly BC concentrations ranged from 77.61 ng m(-3) to 59.55 mg m(-3) with an average of 2.52 mg m(-3), showing a clear seasonal pattern with high values in spring, fall, and winter and low values in summer. Events of high BC concentrations occurred frequently in spring as a result of long-range transport of polluted air masses from the north, northwest, and south in the atmosphere over the Asian continent. The Yangtse River Delta (YRD) and China Anhui Province, the North China Plain (NCP), Northeast China, the Mongolian boundary near China and Russia, Middle Asia, and some areas of Russian Far East were major potential contribution sources for the observed pollutants. The region between Jiangsu Province and Anhui Province of China and the boundary regions between China and Russian Primorskiy and Khabarovskiy were possible source areas of fire emissions having great contributions to high BC levels at Tongyu. The region between Jiangsu Province and Anhui Province of China was the most important anthropogenic fire source of agricultural residue burning outflows.

Concentration, optical characteristics, and emission factors of brown carbon emitted by on-road vehicles

Ru-Jin Huang, Wei Yuan, Lu Yang, Huinan Yang, Wenjuan Cao, Jie Guo, Ningning Zhang, Chongshu Zhu, Yunfei Wu, Renjian Zhang

Summary: This study investigated the concentrations, optical properties, and emission factors of organic carbon, water-soluble organic carbon, and humic-like substances in fine particulate matter emitted from vehicles in three road tunnels in Xiamen, China. The findings showed that vehicle emissions were a source of atmospheric brown carbon, and the chromophores of humic-like substances emitted from vehicles had a disproportionately high effect on the light absorption characteristics of brown carbon.

Modeling spatial variation of gaseous air pollutants and particulate matters in a Metropolitan area using mobile monitoring data

Jia Xu, Wen Yang, Zhipeng Bai, Renyi Zhang, Jun Zheng, Meng Wang, Tong Zhu

Summary: This study aimed to develop spatial models for regulated and non-regulated air pollutants using 6 algorithms and compare their prediction performances. The results showed that traffic variables were the key factors affecting the spatial variation of air pollutants, and the models using partial least squares regression and random forest algorithms performed the best. These models captured the different spatial patterns of air pollutants and could be used to assess toxic air pollutant exposures in human health studies.

In Utero Ultrafine Particulate Exposure Yields Sex- and Dose-Specific Responses to Neonatal Respiratory Syncytial Virus Infection

Carmen Lau, Jonathan C. Behlen, Alexandra Myers, Yixin Li, Jiayun Zhao, Navada Harvey, Gus Wright, Aline Rodrigues Hoffmann, Renyi Zhang, Natalie M. Johnson

Summary: This study investigates the impact of maternal exposure to ultrafine particles on neonatal infection, revealing that infant RSV pathology may be exacerbated following low dose UFP exposure, especially in female offspring. The findings emphasize that neonatal responses are dependent on offspring sex and maternal UFP dose.

Quantifying the formation pathways of nitrate in size-segregated aerosols during winter haze pollution

Li Luo, Tingting Liao, Xiaoling Zhang, Yunfei Wu, Jiawei Li, Renjian Zhang, Zhenzhen Zheng, Shuh-Ji Kao

Summary: By coupling nitrate dual isotopes with aerosol chemical compositions, this study investigated the size-segregated formation mechanisms of nitrate (NO3-) during winter haze pollution events in Chengdu, China. Different formation pathways were identified for fine particles and coarse particles, with N2O5 hydrolysis, NO3 + VOCs, and NO2 + OH homogeneous reactions being major contributors for fine particle NO3- production, and the reaction between gas-phase HNO3 and CaCO3 dominating coarse particle NO3- formation. This research provides quantitative insights and a better understanding of NO3- formation during haze pollution.

What controls aerosol 815N-NO3-? NOx emission sources vs. nitrogen isotope fractionation

Li Luo, Siqi Wu, Renjian Zhang, Yunfei Wu, Jiawei Li, Shuh-ji Kao

Summary: The isotopic fractionation among NOy species can affect the evaluation of NOx sources. This study integrated aerosol 815N-NO3- data and fNO2 ratios to investigate the nitrogen isotope fractionation factors (As) in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region from 2013 to 2018. The results showed significant seasonal patterns in both aerosol 815N-NO3- and As, emphasizing the importance of considering As when using atmospheric 815N-NO3- to quantify NOx source allocation.

PYY modulates the tumorigenesis and progression of colorectal cancer unveiled by proteomics

Fangyan Jing, Guanglong Liu, Renyi Zhang, Weisong Xue, Jiabao Lin, Huacong Zhu, Yu Zhu, Chaosong Wu, Yang Luo, Tao Chen, Shenglong Li, Ming Bao

Summary: Through proteomic analysis, we identified the low expression of PYY in colon adenocarcinoma (COAD) tissues. PYY can inhibit the proliferation, migration, and invasion of CRC, and suppress the growth of tumor organoids in a dose-dependent manner. These findings suggest that PYY may serve as a therapeutic target for CRC.

Secondary organic aerosol formation from gasoline and diesel vehicle exhaust under light and dark conditions

Yu Morino, Ying Li, Yuji Fujitani, Kei Sato, Satoshi Inomata, Kiyoshi Tanabe, Shantanu H. Jathar, Yoshinori Kondo, Tomoki Nakayama, Akihiro Fushimi, Akinori Takami, Shinji Kobayashi

Summary: Secondary organic aerosol (SOA) formed from vehicle exhaust is a significant contributor to urban particulate matter in the atmosphere. However, there are uncertainties in the simulation of SOA by air quality models due to differences in SOA formation between vehicle types, exhaust aftertreatment devices, and oxidation conditions. This study conducted smog chamber experiments to investigate the formation of SOA from different vehicles under different conditions. The results showed that there are differences in the formation of SOA and its precursors under different conditions, highlighting the need for further examination of the characteristics of SOA.
