The role of vorticity fluxes in the dynamics of the Zapiola Anticyclone

The Argentine Basin in the South Atlantic Ocean is one of the most energetic regions in the ocean with complicated dynamics, which plays an important role in the global climate. A number of observations have discovered an intense anticyclonic gyre of barotropic circulation around the Zapiola Rise in the center of the basin. Theoretical studies have shown that the Zapiola Anticyclone represents an eddy-driven flow controlled by bottom friction. Recent advances in high-resolution global-ocean data syntheses, performed using NASA supercomputing facilities, provide realistic simulations of the circulation and the variability in the Argentine Basin. Using these simulations and satellite altimeter observations, we analyzed the vorticity balance of the Zapiola Anticyclone. Our results suggest the dominance of vorticity fluxes and the advection of the potential vorticity over a nonuniform bottom topography in determining the variability of the gyre, while the impact of the local wind stress is small. The divergence of the relative vorticity anomaly advection by eddies is found to be the most important contributor to the relative vorticity flux divergence influencing the variability of the Zapiola Anticyclone. Our results demonstrate that the relative vorticity influencing the variability of the anticyclone is mainly advected from the south where the northern branch of the Antarctic Circumpolar Current at the Subpolar Front is located.

Summary: This study presents, for the first time, full-depth, daily measurements of the volume and heat transported by the meridional overturning circulation system in the South Atlantic at 34.5 degrees S based on direct observations. The observations reveal significant seasonal and interannual variations, and the volume and heat transports vary consistently with each other, allowing for the development of a longer time series of heat transport estimates in the region.

Remote Impact of the Equatorial Pacific on Florida Current Transport

Genesis of the Gulf Stream Subseasonal Variability in the Florida Straits

Summary: The properties and generation mechanisms of the Florida Current on the subseasonal timescale were evaluated using in-situ and satellite observations. It was found that coastal-trapped waves are the primary driver of the subseasonal variability in the Florida Current transport, while local winds and open ocean signals have a secondary role. These waves affect the Florida Current transport by up to 2.6 Sv on average, and their energy dissipates significantly as they propagate into the Gulf of Mexico.

Inferring Advective Timescales and Overturning Pathways of the Deep Western Boundary Current in the North Atlantic Through Labrador Sea Water Advection

Interannual to decadal sea level variability in the subpolar North Atlantic:the role of propagating signals

Summary: The gyre-scale, dynamic sea surface height variability is important for ocean circulation, weather, climate, sea level, and ecosystems. A study shows that the first empirical orthogonal function (EOF) mode explains most of the interannual SSH variance in the Labrador and Irminger Sea, while the second EOF mode is more influential in the northeastern part of the subpolar North Atlantic. These two modes evolve together as a quadrature pair associated with the propagation of SSH anomalies from the eastern to the western subpolar North Atlantic.

Interannual variability of sea level in the southern Indian Ocean: local vs. remote forcing mechanisms

This study examines the contributions of remote (Pacific origin) forcing and local wind forcing to heat content and sea level variability in the Indian Ocean using models and observations. The study finds that the relative contributions of these forcing components to interannual variability depend on the location within the basin.
