Summary: Psychiatric disorders are prevalent brain pathologies. Reliable animal models are needed for effective treatment. Zebrafish show complex behaviors similar to rodents and humans, making them suitable for modeling psychiatric disorders. However, there are challenges and the field needs further discussion and consideration of clinical prevalence and pathological complexity. Recent developments in molecular biology might pave the way for wider use of zebrafish in CNS disease modeling.

Summary: This study used a simulated stool called Fecobionics to study different defecation patterns in fecal incontinence patients and compared defecation indices between passive and urge incontinent patients. The results showed that Fecobionics data had higher correlation with symptoms in fecal incontinence patients and provided DI data that cannot be obtained with ARM-BET.

Summary: Using Mendelian randomization design, this study identified eight blood metabolites associated with psychiatric disorders, including five established mediators and three novel mediators. Additional effects on nonpsychiatric diseases were observed for most of the identified metabolites, except for a few. Notably, four metabolites showed no adverse side effects.

Summary: The intensity of the acute psychedelic experience was found to be the main predicting factor of response in all psychiatric and addictive disorders studied, suggesting a potential mechanism involving modulation of the serotoninergic system, default mode network (DMN) disintegration and re-integration, or anti-inflammatory effects.

Summary: The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of domestic violence among patients attending a French psychiatric emergency department and its association with psychiatric disorders. A retrospective study was conducted, including all patients examined in the department from July 1, 2021, to October 31, 2021. The prevalence of domestic violence was 38.2%, with a higher percentage among female victims compared to male victims. Psychological abuse was reported by 20.7% of the victims, physical abuse by 17.2%, sexual abuse by 3.4%, and multiple forms of abuse by 58.6%. The risk of suicide attempt and anxiety disorder was associated with domestic violence among female patients.

Summary: Self-harm, including non-suicidal self-injury and suicide attempts, is prevalent among forensic psychiatric patients, with common methods such as head banging or cutting. The main functions of self-harm include affect regulation, self-punishment, and marking distress. Self-harm is associated with neurodevelopmental disorders and disruptive impulse-control and conduct disorders in this group.

Summary: The aim of this study is to identify the main sociodemographic and clinical correlates associated with frequent service users (FSUs) in an Italian psychiatric emergency department. The results showed that FSUs were more likely to be single, younger, with an earlier onset, and have a longer length of hospitalisation compared to non-FSUs. They were also more prone to bipolar disorder, cluster B personality disorder, substance use disorder, and non-suicidal self-injuries. Furthermore, FSUs were more likely to be discharged against medical advice or have escape attempts from the psychiatric ward.

Summary: This paper summarizes and analyzes 70 registered clinical studies on clinicaltrials.gov that evaluate the treatment of psychiatric disorders with psychedelics, with the majority focusing on investigating the therapeutic effects of MDMA and psilocybin, especially for PTSD and MDD. Ongoing studies on psychedelics highlight the importance of considering relevant research priorities for future proposed studies by researchers and stakeholders.

Summary: The effectiveness and mode of action of lithium treatment for neurological conditions remains not fully understood, although studies have shown its impact on protein posttranslational modifications and neuronal physiology. Determining specific posttranslational modification patterns could be a promising strategy to develop disease biomarkers and predict lithium responsiveness.

Summary: The study expanded the regulatory networks related to sex-differential methylation and psychiatric disorders by integrating methylation quantitative trait loci, gene expression, and protein-protein interaction data. It found significant enrichment of sex-associated genes in psychiatric disorder-associated gene sets, suggesting that sex-differential genes in neuronal pathways may contribute to the sex-bias of psychiatric disorders.
