In January 2007 the American Medical Association added a new Current Procedural TerminologyA (R) (CPT) code, 96040, for Medical Genetics and Genetic Counseling Services. In order to identify the impact of having this new code and to identify issues with implementation of the code, the National Society of Genetic Counselors (NSGC) CPTA (R) Working Group surveyed NSGC members using an internet-based survey tool. The majority of respondents (94%) reported being aware of the new code and over half of the respondents (69%) said they were billing for genetic counseling. Approximately 24% of those billing reported using 96040. Many facilities are not using this code and the reported success of billing using 96040 is highly varied. Continued education may be beneficial to encourage reimbursement for 96040 and follow up is needed to assess the ongoing implementation and impact of the new CPTA (R) code.

Summary: The study found that every 5kg/m(2) increase in BMI is associated with higher risks of colorectal cancer, with women being less affected than men. There is a potential interaction between BMI and a SMAD7 gene variant that may influence colorectal cancer risk specifically in women.

Summary: This study identified multiple genes associated with colorectal cancer risk through a transcriptome-wide association study, including genes in novel loci. Furthermore, previously unreported genes were also discovered in known GWAS-identified loci. Through colocalization analysis, additional putative susceptibility genes were identified, providing new insights into the biological mechanisms underlying CRC development.

Summary: This study utilized a Mendelian randomization approach to assess the association between CRP concentrations and colorectal cancer-specific survival, and found no causal effect of circulating CRP concentrations on colorectal cancer-specific survival. Further research on genetically determined levels of other inflammatory biomarkers is needed for colorectal cancer survival outcomes.

Summary: This study developed risk prediction models for early-onset colorectal cancer (CRC) that incorporate an environmental risk score (ERS) and a polygenic risk score (PRS). The study found that increasing values of ERS and PRS were associated with increasing relative risks for early-onset CRC. Personal risk scores have the potential to identify individuals at differential relative and absolute risk for early-onset CRC, and may improve screening and outcomes.
