Summary: Our society is aging rapidly, and there is a need for better geriatric care. However, healthcare professionals often have a poor understanding of frailty, leading to suboptimal care for older adults. In order to improve this situation, we propose a structured program that includes digital technologies and hands-on practice opportunities to enhance medical students' understanding and care for frail older adults.

Summary: This study examines the association between intergenerational educational mobility and Type 2 Diabetes among US Latino adults. The results suggest that stable high intergenerational educational attainment is associated with higher prevalence of prediabetes and lower prevalence of Type 2 Diabetes. On the other hand, downward mobility is associated with higher prevalence of prediabetes and worse glycemic control, while upward mobility is associated with lower prevalence of Type 2 Diabetes.

Summary: This research examines the health insurance literacy and healthcare utilization of international students at a university in the US Midwest. The study found that many of the surveyed students had difficulty identifying basic terms and understanding their financial responsibilities in medical settings. Regression results showed that the students' continent of origin and length of stay in the US significantly predicted their understanding of health insurance terms. The majority of international students surveyed expressed confusion about their health insurance, but only about 20% had delayed or skipped care due to unfamiliarity with the system. The study suggests that universities and other institutions should take more initiatives to help international students understand the health insurance system.

Summary: This study aimed to analyze the change in diabetes-related hospitalization rates of rural Latino older adult patients compared with their White counterparts and determine the factors, including rural health clinic participation in accountable care organizations, that are related to reduced disparities in diabetes-related hospitalization rates. The results showed a significant decrease in disparity over time and moderate evidence that consistent ACO participation is associated with lower health disparities. However, no causal relationship can be established, and it is crucial for ACOs to monitor their provision of services to vulnerable populations.

Summary: Disparities in eye health and eye care often stem from a lack of understanding of ocular diseases and limited utilization of ophthalmic health services among different populations. This article highlights the significance of health literacy in improving health outcomes and discusses the current status of health literacy in visual health and existing disparities. It explores strategies to enhance health literacy and reduce disparities in visual health and eye care by promoting the dissemination of health information.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the characteristics, physiological indices, and health literacy affecting self-care behavior in patients with chronic kidney disease in South Korea. The results showed significant differences in self-care behavior based on age, cohabitation status, employment, smoking status, dialysis, comorbidities, and certain physiological indices. Factors such as not currently working, being a non-smoker, having end-stage kidney disease, and a positive response to health literacy significantly affected self-care behavior.

Summary: This study examined the sex-specific associations between mutually exclusive iron-anemia status categories and hemoglobin A1C (HbA1C) levels in U.S. Hispanics/Latinos without self-reported diabetes. The results showed that women with iron deficiency anemia (IDA) had higher odds of prediabetes and probable diabetes mellitus based on HbA1C levels, while men with non-IDA had higher odds of probable diabetes mellitus. This highlights the importance of considering iron-anemia status when interpreting elevated HbA1C levels in this population.

Summary: The study aimed to investigate the impact of health literacy (HL) on medical care avoidance, and clarify this impact through an underexplored mediator: a sense of policy alienation towards medical care policy for residents (SPA-M). A moderated mediation model with control perception as a moderator was used to analyze the relationship between HL and SPA-M. The cross-sectional survey of 470 people aged ≥ 60 revealed a significant negative association between HL and medical care avoidance intention, partially mediated by SPA-M.

Summary: Social factors impact the health outcomes of patients with diabetes, and there is interest in these areas from health systems, researchers, and policymakers. To improve population health and outcomes, organizations are integrating medical and social care, working with community partners, and seeking sustainable financing. This article summarizes promising examples and future opportunities for integrated medical and social care across three themes: primary care transformation, addressing individual social needs and structural changes, and payment reform. Achieving equitable health outcomes through integrated care requires a significant shift in healthcare financing and delivery.
