A number of chaos-based image encryption algorithms have been proposed in recent years, and most of them employ confusion-diffusion architecture. This paper presents a new confusion scheme based on paired interpermuting planes. In the proposed new confusion operation, an exchange and random access strategy is employed to replace the traditional confusion operations. The efficiency of the proposed scheme was analyzed by evaluating its histogram distribution, its correlation coefficients, its ability to resist differential attacks, its ability to retain information (entropy analysis), its computational speed, and its ability to guarantee the security of its key scheme. Simulations have been carried out and the results confirmed the superior security and computing speed of our scheme compared to other comparable algorithms. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V.
