The present research is aimed to introduce Heelball (HB) index from foot dimensions and determine whether this index exhibits sexual dimorphism. The study was conducted on a sample of 303 North Indian individuals (154 men, and 149 women) aged between 13 and 18 years. The stature, body weight, foot breadth at the ball (BBAL), and foot breadth at heel (BHEL) were measured. The HB index was derived by the formula BHEL x 100/BBAL. Although the mean HB index was larger in women in both feet it showed statistically significant sex differences in the right foot only. The study shows that while the foot dimensions show a positive correlation with stature and weight, the HB index is independent of the stature and weight of an individual. This novel index (HB index) may be utilized in sex determination when a part of the foot is brought for medico-legal investigation.

A methodological comparison of discriminant function analysis and binary logistic regression for estimating sex in forensic research and case-work

Deepika Rani, Kewal Krishan, Tanuj Kanchan

Summary: The accuracy of two multivariate statistical approaches, discriminant function analysis (DFA) and binary logistic regression (BLR), for estimating sex from human external ear anthropometry was assessed in this study. The results showed that both methods performed equally well in sex discrimination and can be used in forensic research and case-work.

Unusual fingerprint patterns in humans: implications for forensic casework and fingerprint research

Neha Baryah, Kewal Krishan, Tanuj Kanchan

Summary: This study aimed to explore unusual fingerprint patterns and compare them with commonly occurring and classifiable patterns. A total of 512 participants from two ethnic groups in North India were sampled, resulting in 5120 fingerprint data which were analyzed based on Henry's classification. The incidence of unusual prints was found to be 0.21%. This research is significant for fingerprint identification, forensic science, and biological anthropology.

An evaluation of the three-component pubic symphyseal human age estimation method: a CT-based exploration in an Indian population

Summary: Age estimation is crucial in identifying individuals in various contexts. This study aimed to evaluate the applicability of the McKern-Stewart pubic symphyseal age estimation method in an Indian population. The method showed limited accuracy in males, but Bayesian analysis improved age estimation accuracy and showed limitations in females. Weighted summary age models provided inaccuracy values for multivariate age estimation in both sexes. Overall, the McKern-Stewart method had limited applicability and additional factors should be considered for accurate age estimation.

Summary: This study provides global, regional, and national estimates of the burden of chronic respiratory diseases (CRDs) from 1990 to 2019. The results show that although the age-standardised prevalence, death, and DALY rates of CRDs have decreased, they still cause a substantial burden and deaths worldwide. The highest death and DALY rates are found in low and low-middle SDI countries, emphasizing the urgent need for improved preventive, diagnostic, and therapeutic measures.

Is it possible to estimate sex from signatures and handwriting? A review of literature, observations, and future perspectives

Rakesh Meena, Kewal Krishan, Abhik Ghosh, Tanuj Kanchan

Summary: Estimating sex is highly important in Forensic Science as it aids in identifying individuals during crime scene investigations. Sex differences in human behaviour are a result of natural selection and can influence the phenotypic expression of motor skills. Phenotypic manifestation of biological and behavioural traits, such as signatures and handwriting, can help determine sex. Handwriting features can be used to establish whether a signature belongs to a male or female writer. Based on studies, the accuracy of sex prediction from signature and handwriting ranges from 45 to 80%.

Age estimation from iliac auricular surface using Bayesian inference and principal component analysis: a CT-based study in an Indian population

Varsha Warrier, Rutwik Shedge, Pawan Kumar Garg, Shilpi Gupta Dixit, Kewal Krishan, Tanuj Kanchan

Summary: Age estimation in older adults can be accurately done through CT-based examination of the auricular surface using the Buckberry-Chamberlain method. Three out of five morphological features described in the method were observed in CT scans of an Indian population. Bayesian analysis of individual features yielded high accuracy percentages and error rates, and summary age models derived from these features provided more accurate estimates of age.

Summary: Peripheral artery disease is a growing public health problem globally. This study used the Global Burden of Disease, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study database to estimate the global disease burden of peripheral artery disease, its risk factors, and temporospatial trends. The findings highlight the importance of addressing modifiable risk factors to mitigate the burden of peripheral artery disease.
