Summary: Based on a systematic review, the coastal erosion problem in Hai Hau is associated with the decrease in water and sediment discharged from the So River, which became active after a flood in 1787, resulting in channel bifurcation and abandonment of the old channel. Through simulation and historical analysis, this study found that erosion in Hai Hau started in the late 18th century. The study suggests that the decrease in river sediment load, as well as subsidence and sea level rise, are the major causes of long-term erosion on Hai Hau Coast.

Summary: This study evaluates the effectiveness and stability of the shrimp-mangrove farming model in Nam Dinh province, Vietnam. The results show that the model has advantages such as low investment costs, diversified income sources, low risk, and environmental sustainability. However, it also has limitations in terms of financial efficiency and stability. The study proposes management implications to enhance the effectiveness and sustainability of shrimp farming in the Red River Delta, Vietnam.

Summary: This study conducted three environmental monitoring events in a 1800-ha clam culture area in Giao Thuy district, Nam Dinh province, Vietnam. The results showed that ecosystem and aquaculture in estuary areas are sensitive to climate change and severe climatic events, with decreased water quality and substantial changes in clam-cultured species and activities after storms.

Summary: The study investigated the prevalence of cotton dust-related allergic asthma among textile workers in Nam Dinh province, Vietnam, finding a higher rate compared to the general population. Factors such as overweight, length of employment, personal and family medical history, and duration of cotton dust exposure were identified as important predictors for cotton dust-related allergic asthma in this population. Further evaluation with improved exposure assessment is recommended.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the incidence and potential risk factors of diarrheal diseases in an agricultural community in Vietnam. The study found that participants who used tap water for drinking had a higher frequency of diarrhea, while participants who used a flush toilet had a lower incidence of diarrhea.

Summary: A comprehensive study was conducted on the emission of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) from domestic waste incinerators in northern areas of Vietnam. Sixty-four samples from two incinerators were analyzed for PAHs using gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry. The mean concentrations of & sigma;(16)PAHs in chimney air samples in April, June, September, and November 2021 were 970.9 & PLUSMN; 57.4, 1061.9 & PLUSMN; 49.8, 1070.7 & PLUSMN; 41.3, and 1136.1 & PLUSMN; 136.5 & mu;g m(-3), respectively. The average emission factor of & sigma;(16)PAHs was 7.5 mg/kg. Low molecular weight PAHs were dominant in the analyzed air samples. The toxic equivalent quotient ranged from 30.7 to 41.7 mg/kg, with an incremental lifetime cancer risk exceeding 10(-3). These results indicate a high level of concern with potential negative health consequences. Four diagnostic ratios of PAHs were identified and can serve as source markers for domestic waste incinerators.

Summary: In Nam Dinh province, groundwater in the Red River delta plain is experiencing saltwater intrusion from the Gulf of Tonkin. Large-scale groundwater abstraction since 1996 has raised concerns about sustainability. Research shows that saline river water is entering the shallow aquifers, while marine pore water is leaching out of deeper clay layers.

Summary: This study examined the risks of flavivirus exposure in pig farms in peri-urban and suburban areas of Hanoi city. The results showed a low level of awareness about mosquito-borne diseases among pig farmers and a high prevalence of flavivirus exposure in pigs. Common practices to prevent mosquitoes at home and on farms did not significantly reduce the risk of flavivirus exposure in pigs.

Summary: Commercial cheese brines can be a reservoir for salt-tolerant pathogens. This study found that the addition of hydrogen peroxide can effectively reduce the population of L. monocytogenes in cheese brines, especially at higher temperatures and salt concentrations. The presence of indigenous microorganisms may neutralize the effect of hydrogen peroxide.
