Summary: This study aimed to assess the efficacy of emesis induction for the recovery of gastric foreign objects in cats and determine if any factors influenced the recovery. The results showed that 50% of the cats attempted to induce emesis successfully vomited some or all of the foreign object. Factors such as the time from ingestion, time from the last meal, presence of food in the vomitus, type of the object, and its length, width, and surface area did not affect the likelihood of successful recovery with emesis induction.

Summary: This study investigates the lower airway microbiota of asthmatic pet cats and finds dysbiosis characterized by alterations in microbial community composition and identification of possible pathobionts. Mycoplasma felis, a known lower airway pathogen of cats, is identified in 35% of asthmatic cats.

Summary: In this study, a hybrid dry powder (HDP) strategy is proposed for rapid sealing of wet tissues during gastric endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD). The HDPs form a hydrogel layer over the target tissue by absorbing water and forming electrostatic interactions, achieving strong adhesion through hydrogen bonding. The HDP-assembled hydrogel demonstrates fast adhesion to wet tissues, low swelling rate, and resistance to acidic degradation.

Summary: The aim of this study is to describe the surgical anatomy of the feline gastrointestinal tract and provide surgical tips for veterinary surgeons. The knowledge of surgical anatomy in this region is of high importance due to the frequent surgical procedures performed on the gastrointestinal tract of cats by veterinary surgeons.

Summary: One novel trend in reducing aero-engine noise is to utilize the silent flight mechanism of owls by applying perforations on fan stator vanes. A three-dimensional solution for acoustic scattering by annular perforated cascades is presented in this paper, and it is found that non-uniform porosity is more effective in reducing propagating noise.

Summary: Traumatic eardrum perforation is a common presentation in otorhinolaryngologic practices. A study analyzed the outcome of watchful waiting in managing traumatic tympanic membrane perforation in 272 patients treated at two different specialist ENT practices from June 2002 to March 2019. The study found that watchful waiting can be considered appropriate for traumatic eardrum perforation.

Summary: This study is the largest comparative study to date between EUS-GE and SGJ for mGOO. The results show that EUS-GE has shorter time to resumption of oral intake, lower albumin levels, and shorter length of stay compared with SGJ. EUS-GE also allows earlier resumption of diet and chemotherapy with fewer adverse events.

Summary: Cats serve as a natural reservoir for many non-Helicobacter pylori Helicobacters, and close contact with animals has been identified as a risk factor for gastric diseases caused by these bacteria. The prevalence of Helicobacter species in cats was determined, with Helicobacter heilmannii and Helicobacter salomonis being the most commonly detected species. Significant histopathological alterations associated with the presence of Helicobacter spp. were not observed in most cases, suggesting potential adaptation of these bacteria to the feline gastric microenvironment.

Summary: Microscopically positive (R1) surgical margins after gastrectomy increase gastric cancer recurrence risk, and this study aimed to explore the impact of R1 margins on recurrence patterns and survival. The results showed that patients with R1 margins had aggressive clinicopathologic features and a significantly lower 5-year overall survival rate. Most patients with R1 margins experienced peritoneal recurrence, and the time to peritoneal dissemination recurrence was relatively short.

Summary: This study investigated the management of primary spontaneous pneumothorax (PSP) in pediatrics and found that conservative treatment with observation alone is effective for small PSP or clinically stable larger PSP. Chest drain insertion and surgery should be considered for cases of large symptomatic PSP, persistent air leak, and/or relapse after chest drain insertion. CT imaging plays a role in the management of PSP. The study also found that chest drain insertion and surgery resulted in longer length of stay compared to observation alone.

Summary: This study investigated the oncologic outcomes of clinical stage IA2 non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) treated with preoperative simulation and surgical resection. The results showed that preoperative simulation confirmed the relationship between the tumor and surrounding blood vessels and bronchus, ensuring an oncologic safety margin. Preoperative simulation was found to be a useful tool for early-stage NSCLC surgical procedures. Further long-term follow-up is needed.

Summary: This study investigated the surgical blood loss during canine enucleation and its relationship with patient, surgical, and anesthetic factors. The results showed that the choice of anesthesia, surgical approach, and dog size were associated with the amount of blood loss. Subconjunctival enucleation may be preferred for patients at higher risk of hemodynamic complications.
