Summary: This study investigated the potential changes in the spatial distribution of seven of the most harvested small pelagic fish species in Europe under different climate change scenarios. The results showed that the environmental suitability for most species may decrease in the Mediterranean and western North Sea, while increasing in the Black and Baltic Seas. Under the most pessimistic scenario, climate-related local extinctions were expected in the south-eastern Mediterranean basin.

Summary: This study developed an empirical index based on functional and bio-ecological traits to estimate the Invasive Potential (IP) of 13 fishes expanding their distributional range into the Mediterranean Sea. Results showed the importance of functional traits related to reproduction for determining high invasion potential, and highlighted a potential future expansion of high Environmental Suitability Index (ESI) values, and thus REINS IP, towards the northern Mediterranean due to climate change.

Summary: This article aimed to compare two methods for quantifying the metrics of the 3D structure of shallow rocky reefs (rugosity) and to quantify the possible links between this habitat structure and fish assemblages. Photogrammetry was found to be the most efficient method in terms of measurement quality and time compared to the chain-and-tape method. 3D habitat descriptors differed significantly between sites and were found to influence fish abundance and species richness.

Summary: A two-year experiment was conducted to investigate the impact of Pollicipes pollicipes harvest on intertidal community structure and ecological diversity. The study found that intensive exploitation resulted in a decrease in P. pollicipes and Mytilus spp. coverage, while Chthamalus spp. and Corallina spp. increased. The recovery of P. pollicipes aggregations was slow and variable, but their coverage increased under non-extracted conditions.

Summary: This study evaluates the effects of bleaching on the oocytes of the Mussismilia harttii coral and investigates the strategies employed by these cells to maintain antioxidant balance and cellular homeostasis. The research finds that bleached coral oocytes experience lipid damage, but are still able to maintain their quality and potentially elongate their lifespan and fertilization capability. This response may be linked to an intensification of heterotrophy in bleached corals.
