Summary: This study investigated the expression of calprotectin in tissues of patients with chronic rhinosinusitis with polyps and explored its association with clinical features. The findings showed that calprotectin is expressed not only in neutrophils but also in eosinophils, and its expression is positively correlated with the number of eosinophils in tissues and blood. Additionally, calprotectin expression is associated with olfactory function, Lund-Mackay CT score, and JESREC score. Based on these results, calprotectin expression could serve as a biomarker for disease severity in chronic rhinosinusitis.

Summary: The coronavirus pandemic has highlighted the importance of bioactive materials in mitigating viral infections. Bioinspired antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) have emerged as suitable building blocks for antimicrobial coatings due to their versatile design and environmentally friendly features. This review discusses the advances and opportunities in using AMPs to create virucidal coatings, including the fundamental characteristics of peptide structure, advances in coating medical devices, and the role of different materials in designing antiviral coatings.

Summary: Mycobacterium tuberculosis is a major infectious agent causing millions of deaths each year, and its drug resistance has become a significant issue. Antimicrobial peptides have shown effectiveness against multidrug-resistant bacteria, but their efficiency against Mycobacterium tuberculosis remains uncertain due to the complexity of its cell wall.

Summary: Hybrid antimicrobials combining thiazole and sulfonamide derivatives demonstrate potent antibacterial activity, especially with 4-tert-butyl and 4-isopropyl substitutions. The drug-peptide complex exhibits distinctive antibacterial behavior compared to drug alone or peptide alone, displaying faster killing kinetics towards bacterial cells.

Summary: Aquaculture production is increasing, but infectious diseases pose a threat. Antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) from photosynthetic marine organisms have potential as alternatives to antibiotics in aquaculture due to their defense mechanisms and additional activities. This study reviews the knowledge about AMPs from photosynthetic marine organisms and evaluates their suitability for aquaculture.

Summary: This study used in silico methods to predict anti-infective and cell-penetrating peptides derived from natterins from a venomous fish. The results showed that these peptides have potential as alternative therapies and drug delivery systems. The study also analyzed the physicochemical properties, membrane-binding potential, and cellular location of the peptides, and identified several peptides with promising biological activity.

Summary: The majority of research on antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) focuses on how they permeabilize lipid bilayers, but AMPs must also pass through non-lipid cell envelope components before reaching the lipid bilayer. There is a growing number of AMPs that target non-lipid structures inside the cell. It is therefore valuable to study AMP mechanisms in intact bacteria using biophysical methods traditionally applied to liposomes.

Summary: In the postgenomic era, it is important to quickly identify the functions of therapeutic peptides generated in large numbers. Predicting accurate multi-functional therapeutic peptides (MFTP) is a challenge. This study proposes a novel multi-label method called ETFC, which utilizes a deep learning-based model architecture and an imbalanced learning strategy with a multi-label focal dice loss function. Experimental results show that ETFC outperforms existing methods for MFTP prediction. Teacher-student-based knowledge distillation is used to obtain attention weights from self-attention mechanism and quantify their contributions to investigated activities in MFTP prediction.

Summary: The transmission of pathogens through contact with contaminated surfaces is a significant route for the spread of infections, including the recent outbreak of COVID-19. Disinfection and sanitization are commonly used methods, but they have limitations such as antibiotic resistance and viral mutation. Peptides have been studied as a potential alternative due to their ability to interact with microorganisms and their applications in drug delivery and immunomodulation. This study focuses on antiviral coating strategies and their applications in personal protective equipment, healthcare devices, textiles, and public surfaces.

Summary: The activity of many antibiotics depends on the initial cell density used in bacterial growth inhibition assays, with a significant inoculum effect observed for higher cell densities. Antimicrobial peptides perturb cell membranes and the inoculum effect can impact their bacterial killing ability. Routine evaluation of the dependence of antimicrobial peptides and peptidomimetics on inoculum density should be considered.

Summary: Anxiety is a disorder that can be managed with a combination of therapies or the use of complementary and alternative medicine. Scientists are searching for natural anxiolytics and have identified several medicinal plants with active components. However, further studies are needed to minimize side effects and enhance effectiveness. The use of natural anxiolytics can be improved by managing preparation protocols.

Summary: Antimicrobial peptides play an important role in defending against infections by interacting with microbial membranes and lipids, with endotoxin-induced hyperinflammation being a key factor. Host defense peptide and peptide antibiotic were shown to reduce endotoxin activation by directly interacting with host cells. This discovery of a host cell-directed mechanism of immune control provides valuable insights for the development and therapeutic use of AMPs.
