Summary: A structured data-driven methodology, including machine learning models, was used to predict ICU length of stay and the risk of prolonged stay in a large multicentre Brazilian ICU database. The models proved accurate in predicting individual length of stay and identifying patients with a high risk of prolonged stay early on.

Summary: MarketScan, a commercial insurance claims database, is a reliable source for monitoring trends in Lyme disease diagnoses in the United States. Despite differences in diagnostic patterns, the age and sex distributions of cases are similar to those reported through surveillance. Further investigation is needed to understand epidemiologic differences, such as misdiagnoses in low-incidence states.

Summary: This study investigated the prevalence and types of prescription drugs used repeatedly in children and adolescents in Germany in 2016. The results showed significant variations in the proportion as well as the type of drugs used repeatedly by sex and age, raising concerns regarding appropriateness of prescribing certain drugs that should be addressed in future studies.

Summary: This study found that burn admissions have a predictable temporal distribution, with the lowest point during the early morning hours and a peak in admissions at 3 PM. There was no association with the day of the week, although weekend admissions skewed slightly later. No predictable seasonal pattern in burn admissions was identified.

Summary: This study aims to develop models to assess the clinical utility of health administrative data in adult eating disorder emergency presentations and length of stay. The results show that health administrative data can describe associations and predict admissions and length of stay. Utilizing health administrative data in this way is an efficient process for assessing impacts of multiple factors on patient care and predicting health care outcomes.

Summary: The opening of short stay paediatric assessment units (SSPAU) in Scottish hospitals has varying impacts on the proportion of zero day admissions. While overall there was an increase in the proportion of zero day admissions after SSPAUs opened, some health boards experienced a reduction in zero day admissions. Understanding differences in clinical referral pathways between health boards is crucial for reducing zero day admissions.

Summary: The study found that outlier cases of length of stay are utilizing a growing share of hospital resources and beds, with both the mean outlier LOS and inpatient LOS excluding outliers increasing over the study period. Excluding these outliers from data reporting, based on the assumption of their rarity, may need to be reconsidered in order to implement targeted interventions that can effectively reduce length of stay, improve patient care, and maintain hospital capacity.

Summary: This study compares psychiatric hospitalization rates between patients receiving in-person psychiatric care and virtual psychiatric care during the COVID-19 pandemic. The results show that there was a significant decrease in hospitalization rates between 2019 and 2020, suggesting a decrease in admissions associated with the adoption of telepsychiatry.

Summary: Follow-up psychiatric care is crucial for young adults who have undergone hospital treatment for deliberate self-harm. Our study found that patients with a history of psychiatric treatment and a diagnosis of psychosis, mood or personality disorders were more likely to be admitted to psychiatric inpatient treatment. However, alcohol or substance misuse diagnoses and repeated presentations of self-harm were inversely associated with admissions to psychiatric inpatient treatment.

Summary: This study examined the relationship between SARS-CoV-2 testing and emergency department length of stay. The results showed that universal testing increased admission length of stay and detected only 1 positive case every other day. Regular operational flow and infection prevention needs need to be balanced in order to support mitigation and containment efforts.

Summary: The first UK lockdown did not significantly increase the total number of psychiatric admissions or the gender percentage, but there was an 11.8% increase in formal sectioning under the Mental Health Act 1983. Additionally, there was a significant decrease in admissions via the crisis team. Changes in diagnoses were observed between March and May, with schizophrenia admissions for men in April (18.7%) and women in March (18.4%) being the most statistically significant. These findings highlight the impact of COVID-19 on the legal status of psychiatric admissions and stress the importance of a robust, adaptable, and open psychiatric service.

Summary: The COVID-19 pandemic had a significant impact on the number of daily psychiatric emergency admissions, with a decrease in admissions compared to previous years. Length of stay was not significantly different. Multimodal care structures are needed to ensure the care of patients with severe mental illness in crisis situations.

Summary: The objective of this study was to describe the incidence of Kawasaki Disease (kDa) in England from 2006 to 2021. The study identified cases using hospital episode statistics with an ICD-10 diagnostic code for kDa and validated the diagnoses using medical records. The results showed higher incidence rates of kDa in children under 16, especially among non-White ethnicities and more deprived socioeconomic groups.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the incidence of liver injury associated with acetaminophen compared with loxoprofen and celecoxib over a 1-year period. The results showed that acetaminophen was not non-inferior to loxoprofen or celecoxib in terms of the incidence rate of liver injury. Therefore, the non-inferiority of acetaminophen to loxoprofen and celecoxib in terms of the risk of liver injury in clinical practice is inconclusive.
