Background: Mercury is a neurotoxic environmental pollutant. However, the literature on the neurodevelopmental effect of low-level prenatal mercury exposure from maternal fish intake is inconsistent. We assessed the association between prenatal mercury exposure and infant neurodevelopment in coastal areas of 4 Mediterranean countries. Methods: This was a prospective cohort study that planned to enroll approximately 1700 mother-infant pairs. Pregnant women and their newborn children were recruited in selected hospitals of the study areas. Biological samples, including maternal hair and cord blood, were collected from mothers and children, and the concentrations of mercury and other elements were measured. Exposures to lifestyle, environmental, and social factors were assessed through questionnaires. The main outcome was child neurodevelopment at 18 months, as measured by the Bayley Scales of Infant and Toddler Development, Third Edition. Conclusions: This cohort has a number of strengths. First, mercury concentration was measured in several biological samples, which allows for a better understanding of mercury kinetics and is useful for sensitivity analyses. Therefore, we expect to be able to adjust for the potential confounding effects of lifestyle and social factors and for the effects of other elements that were measured in the biological samples. Finally, this is a multinational study and thus permits assessment of the relation between mercury and child neurodevelopment in different populations.

Summary: This report summarizes the results of the HBM4EU project and associated studies regarding acrylamide exposure levels. The findings show an increasing trend in acrylamide exposure in children, while the trend is less significant in adults and smokers. The average acrylamide exposure still exceeds suggested benchmark levels, raising specific concerns for children. Further research is needed to confirm the declining trend observed in recent years.

Summary: Within the HBM4EU initiative, HBM indicators were developed to address key policy questions and support chemical policies. Result indicators provide information on chemical exposure in different demographic groups and allow comparisons to identify differences and inform policy measures. Impact indicators assess health risks by comparing exposure values to health-based guidance values, helping to identify relevant health issues and support risk management decisions.

ALAD and APOE polymorphisms are associated with lead and mercury levels in Italian pregnant women and their newborns with adequate nutritional status of zinc and selenium

Neza Palir, Anja Stajnko, Janja Snoj Tratnik, Darja Mazej, Alenka Sesek Briski, Alenka France-Stiglic, Valentina Rosolen, Marika Mariuz, Elisa Giordani, Fabio Barbone, Milena Horvat, Ingrid Falnoga

Summary: This study examined the associations of ALAD, VDR, and APOE SNPs with exposure biomarkers of Pb and other trace elements in Italian pregnant women and their newborns. The results showed that variant alleles of ALAD rs1800435 and rs1805313 were negatively associated with Pb levels, while a positive association was observed for rs1139488. None of the VDR SNPs had any association with Pb levels. Regarding APOE, the epsilon 4 allele was associated with lower Hg levels, while a positive association was found with the epsilon 2 allele and Pb levels in newborn girls.

Summary: This study suggests that a second booster dose of the bivalent (original/BA.4-5) mRNA vaccine administered 7-90 days post-administration, compared to a first booster dose received >= 120 days earlier, has an effectiveness of approximately 60% in preventing severe COVID-19 in individuals aged 60 years and older who have never been infected. The relative effectiveness is also around 60% in those infected for more than 6 months. However, there is no significant additional protection observed in individuals infected 4-6 months prior. It is recommended to consider a second booster vaccination 6 months after the latest infection.

Summary: As part of the European Human Biomonitoring Initiative, a human biomonitoring survey was conducted in 23 countries to produce comparable data for the EU. The survey utilized existing HBM capacity in Europe and aligned national or regional studies under the HBM4EU program. The survey included over 10,000 participants from different age groups and measured various biomarkers to assess exposure levels to different chemicals. The data obtained can be used as a reference for global comparison, evaluate the effectiveness of the European Commission's chemical strategy, and guide policy-making.

Summary: Phthalates are widely used as plasticizers for PVC and are associated with adverse effects on the reproductive system. The HBM4EU Aligned Studies have investigated the exposure to ten phthalates and the substitute chemical DINCH in European children and adolescents. The study provides detailed data on exposure levels and differences across European regions, as well as comparisons to biomonitoring guidance values.

Summary: Assigned female at birth (AFAB) individuals with anorgasmia have a smaller clitoral glans and greater distance between the clitoral components and the vagina lumen compared to women with normal orgasmic function. This study investigates whether differences in MRI measurements of neoclitoris volume and distance between the neoclitoris and the neovagina are correlated with differences in sexual function among operated transgender women.

Summary: The study aimed to estimate the incidence and describe the spectrum of inflammatory and autoimmune diseases related to SARS-CoV-2 infection and COVID-19 vaccination in children from two neighboring countries in south-central Europe. A multi-center prospective cohort study was conducted on children under 18 years old who were diagnosed with inflammatory/autoimmune diseases linked to SARS-CoV-2 infection or COVID-19 vaccination and admitted to pediatric tertiary care hospitals in Slovenia and Friuli Venezia Giulia, Italy, from January 1, 2020, to December 31, 2021. The results showed that autoimmune diseases following SARS-CoV-2 infection were 8.5 times more common than severe COVID-19. The most common manifestation was multisystem inflammatory syndrome (MIS-C), and its incidence in this predominantly white population was higher than previously reported. MIS-C did not seem to recur after SARS- CoV-2 reinfection or COVID-19 vaccination. Autoimmune diseases were much more common after SARS-CoV-2 infection than after COVID-19 vaccination.

Summary: This retrospective observational study found that the LUS score at admission is associated with survival rate in COVID-19 patients. The predictive model showed that the LUS score, age, sex, and days in spontaneous breathing can predict the risk of death for COVID-19 patients. Furthermore, surviving patients had a lower difference in LUS scores between admission and discharge.
