The aim of this study was to evaluate the contamination of six edible wild species of mushrooms (Boletus pulverulentus, Cantharellus cibarius, Lactarius quietus, Macrolepiota procera, Russula xerampelina and Suillus grevillei) by heavy metals (Hg, Cd, Pb, Zn, Cu, Ni, Cr, Co, Mn and Fe). Mushroom samples were collected from sites contaminated by emissions from mining and processing of polymetallic ores in operation during the period 1969-1993 in Rudnany, southeast Slovakia. The four study sites spanned up to a 5-km distance from the emission source. The collected mushroom samples were analyzed using Flame Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometry and/or Flame Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometry with graphite furnace. Mercury, Cd and, in some samples, also Pb present the highest risks in terms of contamination of the food chain following subsequent consumption. The content of two metals in the dry matter (dm) of the mushrooms exceeded the limits set by the European Union (EU; Cd: 0.5 mg/kg dm, Pb: 1.0 mg/kg dm). The highest mean contents of the eight metals recorded for S. grevillei were 52.2, 2.15, 107, 104, 2.27, 2.49, 81.6 and 434 mg/kg dm for Hg, Pb, Zn, Cu, Ni, Cr, Mn and Fe, respectively. The highest content of Cd was recorded in M. procera (3.05 mg/kg dm) and that of Co in L. quietus (0.90 mg/kg dm). The calculated weekly intake for Hg, Pb and Cd shows that regular consumption of mushrooms from the studied area poses risks to human health.

A Combination of Taurine and Caffeine in Stallion Semen Extender Positively Affects the Spermatozoa Parameters

Marko Halo Jr, Filip Tirpak, Tomas Slanina, Katarina Tokarova, Martin Massanyi, Lucia Dianova, Eva Mlynekova, Agnieszka Gren, Marko Halo, Peter Massanyi

Summary: This study aimed to determine the impact of different taurine and caffeine combinations on the motility, viability, and oxidative markers of chilled stallion spermatozoa. The results showed that samples treated with the combination of taurine and caffeine significantly improved the motility parameters, without compromising viability or altering redox status. These findings suggest that the combination of taurine and caffeine can be an optimal supplement for improving the quality of stallion semen during chilled storage.

Exploring Consumer Behavior and Preferences towards Edible Mushrooms in Slovakia

Kristina Predanocyova, Julius Arvay, Marek Snirc

Summary: The aim of this study is to examine the behavior and preferences of consumers in Slovakia regarding mushroom consumption. Through a consumer survey of 1166 respondents, the study used statistical methods to analyze differences in consumer behavior among three identified segments. The results showed significant differences in consumption frequency, preferred mealtime, consumption reasons, mushroom species preference, and purchase location. Encouraging mushroom consumption can be achieved by increasing consumer awareness and publishing relevant articles.

Ejaculatory Abstinence Affects the Sperm Quality in Normozoospermic Men-How Does the Seminal Bacteriome Respond?

Eva Tvrda, Michal Duracka, Filip Benko, Anton Kovacik, Daniel Lovisek, Eliska Galova, Jana Ziarovska, Marianna Schwarzova, Miroslava Kacaniova

Summary: This study aimed to describe the bacterial profiles of ejaculates collected after different ejaculatory abstinence periods and explore the associated changes in conventional, oxidative, and immunological characteristics of semen. The analysis revealed that samples collected after two days of abstinence had higher bacterial load and diversity, as well as a greater prevalence of potentially uropathogenic bacteria. However, samples obtained after two hours of abstinence showed a lower occurrence of bacteria. Additionally, shorter ejaculatory abstinence was found to contribute to better sperm quality and reduced damage by reactive oxygen species and pro-inflammatory cytokines.

Toxicity of Bisphenol A and its Replacements in the Mice Leydig Cells In Vitro

Tomas Jambor, Nikola Knizatova, Hana Greifova, Anton Kovacik, Norbert Lukac

Summary: The aim of this study was to investigate the potential impacts of bisphenol A (BPA) and its analogues BPB, BPF, and BPS on mice TM3 Leydig cells, focusing on basal cell viability parameters such as metabolic activity, cell membrane integrity, and lysosomal activity after 48-h exposure. The study also evaluated the effects of bisphenols on ROS production, gap junctional intercellular communication (GJIC), and testosterone secretion. The results showed that activity started at 10 pg/ml of bisphenols after 48-h exposure, and significant ROS production was observed at 5 and 10 pg/ml. Moreover, a significant inhibition of GJIC was confirmed at 10, 25, and 50 pg/ml.

Summary: The rapid determination of beta-lactamase presence in H. influenzae isolates was achieved through indirect detection of degradation ampicillin products using MALDI-TOF MS. This method can distinguish resistant and susceptible strains and accelerate the identification of beta-lactamase-producing strains in clinical microbiology.

Biogenic Elements and Heavy Metals in Hermann's Tortoises-Testudo hermanni: Effect on Serum Biochemistry and Oxidative Status Parameters

Robert Kirchner, Sona Kirchnerova, Filip Tirpak, Jr Marko Halo, Tomas Slanina, Katarina Tokarova, Anton Kovacik, Michal Miskeje, Veronika Komarnanska, Agnieszka Gren, Grzegorz Formicki, Peter Massanyi

Summary: The health of animals is closely tied to the viability of their populations and can be influenced by human activities and diseases. This study analyzed biochemical and molecular indicators in Hermann's tortoises and found correlations between heavy metals like arsenic and nickel and various biochemical and oxidative stress parameters. Cadmium was found to be correlated with the biochemical parameter aspartate aminotransferase. This study highlights the importance of understanding the impact of heavy metals on animal health.

Screening of Toxic Effects of Neonicotinoid Insecticides with a Focus on Acetamiprid: A Review

Lucia Zuscikova, Denis Bazany, Hana Greifova, Nikola Knizatova, Anton Kovacik, Norbert Lukac, Tomas Jambor

Summary: Neonicotinoids are widely used insecticides in crop protection due to their high toxicity to pests and ease of application, but their persistent nature and systemic spread raise concerns about environmental contamination and non-target organism toxicity. Acetamiprid, a new generation insecticide with low toxicity to honeybees, is considered a safer alternative. However, extensive usage of acetamiprid has also negatively impacted non-target animals. This review summarizes animal studies that investigated the toxicity of specific neonicotinoids, highlighting reproductive system disruptions and metabolic changes in both male and female organisms.

Summary: Goat cheese and sheep cheese contain biogenic amines, with tyramine and tryptamine being the most abundant compounds. This study aimed to evaluate the levels of seven commonly occurring biogenic amines in hard and semi-hard goat and sheep cheeses in the Slovak market. The HPLC-DAD method with pre-column derivatization was used for analysis. The presence of biogenic amines was confirmed in all cheese samples, with significant differences observed between goat and sheep cheeses.
