Summary: This study investigated the spatiotemporal distribution, source, and ecological risk of PAHs and SPAHs in surface sediments in Laizhou Bay. The results showed seasonal differences in concentrations of PAHs and SPAHs and a spatial distribution trend of estuary > coast > offshore. Combustion sources, including petroleum, coal, and biomass, were identified as the main contributors to PAHs and SPAHs. The risk level of PAHs was low-to-moderate, while SPAHs posed a moderate-to-high ecological risk.

Summary: This study collected 30 fresh and weathered coal gangue samples from three mine areas in Huaibei, Anhui province, China, and used gas chromatography-triple quadrupole mass spectrometry to analyze 30 polycyclic aromatic compounds. The results showed that multiple polycyclic aromatic compounds existed in coal gangue, with a-PAHs having higher content than 16PAHs. Coal type influenced the content, type, and distribution pattern of these compounds. This study provides new insights for analyzing existing pollution sources.

Summary: The pollution of microplastics (MPs) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in China's second largest urban lake, East Lake, was investigated. MPs were found to be more abundant in the water than in the sediment, while PAHs were mainly present in 2-3-ring PAHs in water and 4-ring PAHs in sediments. There is a strong correlation between MPs and PAHs, indicating that human activities have a significant impact on the distribution of pollutants.

Summary: This study investigates the physicochemical and geochemical changes in soils surrounding a self-burning waste pile in an abandoned coal mine. The results indicate that coal mining can lead to the generation of organic and inorganic contaminants that can spread to surrounding soils. Multivariate statistics and geostatistical methodologies were used to analyze the statistical and spatial relations of different elements and infer their sources. The presence of 16 priority Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) in the soils suggests contributions from various sources.

Summary: This study investigated the pollution characteristics, sources, and ecological risks of PAHs in surface sediments from the river networks and outlets of the Pearl River Delta. The results showed that PAHs in sediments were mainly derived from coke tar and liquid fossil fuel combustion, coal/wood combustion, and petroleum contamination. Ecological risks of PAHs were found to be at moderate levels in the Pearl River Delta, indicating the need for regular monitoring.

Summary: In order to investigate the impact of human activities on the natural environment and the ecological risks in Zhushan Bay of Taihu Lake, the characteristics of organic materials, including elements and 16 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (n-ary sumation (16)PAHs), in a sediment core from Taihu Lake were analyzed. The results showed that the elements C, H, S, and N were the most abundant, with C and the C/H ratio displaying a decreasing trend with depth. The concentration of (16)PAHs also showed a downward trend, with fluctuations, and the analysis indicated that the PAHs were mainly derived from the combustion of fossil fuels. A toxicity analysis revealed potential ecological risks that require control measures.

Summary: The pollution process of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in mining areas, especially coal mining areas, has been accelerated due to coal chemical production and accumulation of gangue. This study analyzed the concentrations, composition, spatial distribution, and sources of PAHs in surface soil, and evaluated their potential carcinogenic risks. The results showed high PAH concentrations in contaminated areas, with coking, oil and biomass combustion, and vehicle emissions and coal combustion being the main sources. The cancer risk for both adults and children in contaminated areas was five times higher than that in uncontaminated areas.

Summary: The study on PAHs in urban soils in Tianjin coastal new region revealed that Han'gu district and Dagang district pose a moderate carcinogenic risk, mainly through dermal contact. Children had higher ingestion risks than adolescents, while dermal contact risks for adults were higher than children and adolescents. The accumulation of PAHs in soils and the resulting risk areas were partly influenced by the economic and industrial structure.

Summary: This study reports the occurrence, fates, and carcinogenic risks of SPAHs and PAHs in two coking wastewater treatment plants, revealing that biological treatment processes effectively remove MPAHs, OPAHs, and NPAHs. Transformation and adsorption were identified as major mechanisms for removing different types of PAHs and SPAHs. Concerns were raised over the relatively high concentrations of SPAHs in excess sludge and treated effluent, as well as the potential lung cancer risks posed by the presence of SPAHs in the ambient air.

Summary: This study investigated the occurrences of PAHs in the surface water and sediments of the Han River. The concentrations of PAHs varied across different seasons, with higher levels during the dry season. The distribution of PAHs showed substantial variation along the river, without a clear trend. The major sources of PAHs were biomass and coal combustion.

Summary: There is a growing interest in the sensory, nutritional, and sanogenic qualities of meat. This study evaluated the impact of hot smoking with natural wood smoke on the presence of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in chicken, duck, and turkey meat. The results showed that duck meat had the highest concentrations of PAHs, regardless of smoking time or wood type. Beech wood led to the highest overall concentration of PAHs, followed by cherry and plum woods. Two-day smoking contributed to higher concentrations of PAHs in the meat.
