Soil is the major environmental reservoir of organic compounds and soil-air exchange is a key process in governing the environmental fate of these compounds on a regional and global scale. Samples of air and soil were collected to study the levels of PAHs in the air and soil of the Agra region. Concentrations of PAH measured at four locations in the city of Agra, covers industrial, residential, roadside and agricultural areas. Samples were extracted with hexane by ultrasonic agitation. Extracts were then fractioned on a silica-gel column and the aromatic fraction was analysed by GC-MS. The mean concentration of the total PAH (T-PAH) in the air of Agra was 24.95, 17.95 and 14.25 ng m(-3), during winter, monsoon and summer respectively. The average concentration of T-PAH in the soil of Agra was 12.50, 8.25 and 6.44 mu g g(-1) in winter, monsoon and summer seasons respectively. The aim of this study was to investigate the rate of approach to equilibrium partitioning of PAHs between air and soil compartments and to determine the direction of net flux of the studied PAH between air and soil. Calculated soil-air fugacity quotients indicate that the soil may now be a source of some lighter weight PAHs to the atmosphere, whereas it appears to be still acting as a long-term sink for the heavier weight PAHs to some extent in this region.

Atmospheric polychlorinated biphenyls in a non-metropolitan city in northern India: Levels, seasonality and sources

Balasubramanian Prithiviraj, Ajay Taneja, Paromita Chakraborty

Summary: Recent study in Agra, a non-metropolitan city in northern India, monitored atmospheric PCBs and found higher concentrations in summer compared to winter, with urban areas being the main source in summer and rural areas in winter. The analysis identified open burning as the major source of atmospheric PCBs, contributing to 80% of the total, while atmospheric transport, petrogenic combustion, and biomass burning accounted for the remaining 20%. The levels observed in the study were within the public health guidelines for inhalation unit risk and the United States Environmental Protection Agency's regional screening level high risk tier for ambient air.

Summary: This study aimed to explore the association between in-utero exposure to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and infant birth weight. The results showed the presence of various PAHs in placental tissue, with pyrogenic PAHs being the predominant source of exposure in the studied population. Regression analysis revealed an inverse correlation between certain PAHs and birth weight, and a significant association between fluoranthene and the depletion trend of birth weight.

The incorporation of lemongrass oil into chitosan-nanocellulose composite for bioaerosol reduction in indoor air

Summary: This study focused on the preparation of lemongrass essential oil loaded chitosan and cellulose nanofibers composites for controlling indoor air bioaerosols. The composite system showed high encapsulation efficiency and citrals content, resulting in a significant reduction in culturable bacteria in indoor air aerosols. The diffusion of aroma molecules in indoor air enhanced the production of ROS, leading to the loss of membrane integrity of bacterial cells, indicating the potential of this composite system for controlling bacteria in respirable bioaerosols.

Summary: FESEMEDX was used for morphological characterization and elemental microanalysis of individual particles, revealing a bimodal size distribution between 0.2 and 1.0 μm. Parameter values such as circularity and aspect ratio indicated that particles were not perfectly spherical, and showed deviation from spherical to non-spherical shapes. Particles with higher area equivalent diameter were found to be more elongated in nature, with variations in elemental composition observed in different size ranges.

Stuti Dubey, Himanshi Rohra, Ajay Taneja

Summary: The study evaluated the effectiveness of two types of air purifiers equipped with High-Efficiency Particulate Air (HEPA) filters in reducing particulate matter (PM) and ion concentrations in a real-world indoor environment. Mechanical HEPA filters were found to be more effective in reducing PM and ion concentrations compared to ion-releasing air purifiers.

Summary: Real-time monitoring of size-segregated particulate matter (PM) was conducted in the glass industrial city Firozabad using a portable aerosol spectrometer. The study found that the concentrations of PM10 and PM2.5 exceeded air quality standards and guidelines. Furthermore, children in both urban and rural areas were highly affected by lung diseases due to the deposition of PM in the head and tracheobronchial regions.
