This paper provides baseline information about the total annual dust fall, and its constituents and seasonal variation, from a subtropical opencast coalmine area in Bina, India. Dust samples were collected monthly for 2 years (June 2002-May 2004) from five sampling sites in the region and analyzed in the laboratory for water-soluble and -insoluble matter. Water-insoluble components constituted the major fraction of the total annual dust fall. Two-way ANOVA indicated significant variations in dust fall at different sites, over the months and in their interactions. The dust deposition rate was highest (luring summer (March-June), followed by winter (November-February) and lowest in the rainy season (July-October). Maximum dust fall was observed near the coal handling plant (at site 2) followed by the receiving pit of the coal handling plant (site 3), near the main sub-station (site 4), Jawahar colony (site 1) and Gharasari village (site 5). An inverse and significant relation was observed between dust fall and precipitation. Our studies have shown that the main residential areas are experiencing higher levels of dust fall which makes them unsuitable for living. We suggest that residential areas should be moved farther away from the mining area in the opposite direction of prevalent winds. (C0 2007 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Assessment of Sources and Pollution Level of Airborne Toxic Metals through Foliar Dust in an Urban Roadside Environment

Triratnesh Gajbhiye, Tanzil Gaffar Malik, Chang-Hee Kang, Ki-Hyun Kim, Sudhir Kumar Pandey

Summary: This study analyzed the concentrations of 19 elements in foliar dust samples collected from 6 different roadside locations in Bilaspur city, India. The results of principal component analysis showed that vehicular activities had the highest impact on the element concentrations, followed by sources such as firework events and other industrial/regional/transboundary sources. Risk assessment of the metal levels in foliar dust indicated moderate and extremely high pollution levels of S and Cd, respectively.

Summary: This study quantitatively analyzed the deposition of PM on plants in an urban roadside environment in Bilaspur, Chhattisgarh, India. The results showed that smooth surface leaves removed PM in the respirable range more efficiently than rough surface leaves, contrary to the general expectation. Micrographs obtained through scanning electron microscopy revealed specific patterns of PM accumulation in distinct size ranges. The study suggests that image-based quantification can be an effective option for selecting plant species for urban road greening programs.

Environmental Factors Affecting Monoterpene Emissions from Terrestrial Vegetation

Summary: This review summarizes the critical roles of monoterpenes in atmospheric chemistry, plant physiology, communication, and defense. It compiles monoterpene emission flux data for different regions and plant species, emphasizing the influence of abiotic environmental factors on biogenic monoterpene emissions and fluxes, including seasonal variations. Previous studies have shown the importance of ambient air temperature and light in controlling monoterpene emissions, especially during summer in temperate regions. Besides temperature and light, other environmental variables such as CO2, O3, soil moisture, and nutrient availability are also known to affect monoterpene emissions, although further research is needed to fully understand their impact.

Adsorption on activated carbon combined with ozonation for the removal of contaminants of emerging concern in drinking water

Beatrice Cantoni, Jessica Ianes, Beatrice Bertolo, Selena Ziccardi, Francesco Maffini, Manuela Antonelli

Summary: This study evaluates the performance of ozonation and adsorption as in-series processes compared to standalone processes for the removal of Contaminants of Emerging Concern (CECs) in drinking water. The combination of both processes proves to be more effective than adsorption and ozonation alone. Ozonation improves the adsorption performance of poorly-oxidizable CECs but worsens that of well-oxidizable compounds. This research highlights the importance of considering both processes in the removal of CECs in drinking water treatment plants.

Hydrological reduction and control effect evaluation of sponge city construction based on one-way coupling model of SWMM-FVCOM: A case in university campus

Summary: The exacerbation of global warming, extreme weather events, and rapid urbanization have led to increased flooding in urban areas. China has adopted sponge city as an efficient means of preventing and controlling urban floods. Using a SWMM-FVCOM model, the hydrological reduction and control effect of sponge city construction (SPCC) within a university campus were evaluated. The study found that implementing SPCC effectively mitigates surface runoff and reduces the severity of urban flooding. However, the efficacy of runoff control decreases with longer rainfall return periods.
