Introduction: X-ray computed micro-tomography scanning allows high-resolution 3-dimensional imaging of small objects. In this study, micro-CT scanning was used to compare the ability of manual and mechanical glide path to maintain the original root canal anatomy. Methods: Eight extracted upper first permanent molars were scanned at the TOMOLAB station at ELETTRA Synchrotron Light Laboratory in Trieste, Italy, with a microfocus cone-beam geometry system. A total of 2,400 projections on 360 degrees have been acquired at 100 kV and 80 mu A, with a focal spot size of 8 mu m. Buccal root canals of each specimen (n = 16) were randomly assigned to Path File (P) or stainless-steel K-file (K) to perform glide path at the full working length. Specimens were then microscanned at the apical level (A) and at the point of the maximum curvature level (C) for post-treatment analyses. Curvatures of root canals were classified as moderate (<= 35 degrees) or severe (>= 40 degrees). The ratio of diameter ratios (RDRs) and the ratio of cross-sectional areas (RAs) were assessed. For each level of analysis (A and C), 2 balanced 2-way factorial analyses of variance (P < .05) were performed to evaluate the significance of the instrument factor and of canal curvature factor as well as the interactions of the factors both with RDRs and RAs. Results: Specimens in the K group had a mean curvature of 35.4 degrees +/- 11.5 degrees; those in the P group had a curvature of 38 degrees +/- 9.9 degrees. The instrument factor (P and K) was extremely significant (P < .001) for both the RDR and RA parameters, regardless of the point of analysis. Conclusions: Micro-CT scanning confirmed that NiTi rotary Path File instruments preserve the original canal anatomy and cause less canal aberrations. (J Endod 2012;38:389-393)

Beached swords from Marano Lagoon (northern Adriatic) reveal ancient land-sea connections and recent coastal evolution

Giacomo Vinci, Alessandro Fontana, Giorgia Musina, Lucia Mancini, Carmine Lubritto, Lucia Liccioli, Federico Bernardini

Summary: Depositional and erosional processes, subsidence and sea-level changes have significantly impacted the coastal landscape of northern Adriatic lagoons. The retrieval and analysis of six metal swords from Marano Lagoon, combined with the study of the coastal paleo-environment, revealed the historical importance of the area and the significant morphological changes that have occurred there. The data also indicate that Marano Lagoon served as a major hub in the northern Adriatic during the Late Middle Ages and Early Modern times, connecting inland Europe with the Mediterranean Sea. Furthermore, the research highlights the onset of coastal erosion and its possible causes.

Electrochemical Cycling Behaviour and Shape Changes of Zn Electrodes in Mildly Acidic Aqueous Electrolytes Containing Quaternary Ammonium Salts

Benedetto Bozzini, Marco Boniardi, Tommaso Caielli, Andrea Casaroli, Elisa Emanuele, Lucia Mancini, Nicola Sodini, Jacopo Strada

Summary: Secondary Zn-based batteries are a promising alternative to Li batteries for stationary storage, but their commercialization is hindered by issues such as anode shape-change and passivation. This study investigates the use of mildly acidic electrolytes to limit the unstable growth of Zn, with a focus on the impact of specific quaternary ammonium salts as electrolyte additives. The results show that TBAB is the most effective additive for low-current density operation, while additive-free electrolyte performs better at high current densities, consistent with previous findings for alkaline electrolytes.

Fatigue design of Additive Manufacturing components through Topology Optimization: Comparison of methodologies based on the defect distribution and on the stress gradient

Carlo Boursier Niutta, Andrea Tridello, Davide S. S. Paolino

Summary: In this paper, the fatigue design of AM components is addressed through Topology Optimization. Two defect-driven methodologies, which model the fatigue response in the finite life range and account for the experimental scatter, are compared. The optimal topologies of a cantilever beam and of an engine rod are determined and compared, showing that the defect-distribution method is the most conservative and the stress-gradient method can also be reliably applied in the case of uniform stress distribution, as in the engine rod.

LCF-HCF strain-life model: Statistical distribution and design curves based on the maximum likelihood principle

A. Tridello, D. S. Paolino

Summary: This paper analytically derives the statistical distribution of total strain and fatigue life in the LCF-HCF life range, based on the Coffin-Manson and Morrow model. Parameter estimation using the maximum likelihood principle allows consideration of both failures and runout specimens. Additionally, a straightforward procedure for design curve estimation based on the likelihood ratio confidence lower bound is developed. The proposed model is validated with literature datasets on steel and aluminum alloys, demonstrating its effectiveness and reliability compared to existing models.

Blunt notch effect on the fatigue response up to 109 cycles of selective laser melting Ti6Al4V specimens

Andrea Tridello, Carlo Boursier Niutta, Filippo Berto, Davide S. Paolino

Summary: This paper investigates the influence of a blunt notch on the very high cycle fatigue (VHCF) response of SLM Ti6Al4V specimens. Ultrasonic fully reversed tension-compression tests were conducted up to 10^9 cycles on unnotched specimens and specimens with a blunt notch. Unnotched specimens exhibited slightly larger fatigue response, but with limited differences. Fatigue failures in both types of specimens originated from defects, which were bigger in unnotched specimens due to the different risk volume and size effect. The interactions between notch, stress gradient, and defect size distribution need to be taken into account for proper assessment of the influence of the notch on VHCF response.

Epoxy and Bio-Based Epoxy Carbon Fiber Twill Composites: Comparison of the Quasi-Static Properties

Carlo Boursier Niutta, Raffaele Ciardiello, Andrea Tridello, Davide S. Paolino

Summary: In recent years, there has been a significant increase in the interest in sustainability in many industrial sectors. This can be achieved through lightweight design and eco-friendly manufacturing processes. One potential solution to the concerns over the use of non-recyclable thermoset composite materials is to replace the thermoset matrix with a recyclable or renewable matrix, such as a bio-based resin. Experimental tests have shown that composites made with bio-based resin have similar mechanical properties to those made with epoxy resins, making them a reliable substitute that reduces the carbon footprint.

Size-Effects on the VHCF Response of Flat Metallic Specimens for Automotive Applications: Analysis of Fatigue Data with a Method Based on the Stress Gradient

Andrea Tridello, Carlo Boursier Niutta, Filippo Berto, Davide Salvatore Paolino

Summary: This study investigates the influence of size-effects on the very high cycle fatigue (VHCF) response of materials through ultrasonic fatigue tests on an aluminum alloy and four steels used in automotive applications. The experimental results are analyzed with an innovative statistical model based on the weakest-link principle and stress gradient within the specimens, revealing that size-effects significantly impact the VHCF response of the investigated materials. This further emphasizes the importance of properly verifying and accounting for size-effects in designing structural components against VHCF failure.

Additively manufactured lattice structures: An innovative defect-based design methodology against crash impact

C. Boursier Niutta, D. S. Paolino, A. Tridello

Summary: This study proposes an experimental-numerical methodology for identifying the lower bound design curve of lattice structures under quasi-static compressive and impact tests. It is validated on an octet truss lattice structure made of an additively manufactured AlSi10Mg alloy. The defect size distribution is assessed through micro computed tomography, and the mechanical tests are simulated using a Finite Element Model (FEM) with a local reduction in truss diameter. The FEM accurately predicts the mechanical behavior, and the lower bound design curve is determined through statistical considerations for safe component design.

Summary: The characterisation of lime mortars is crucial for the conservation and repair of ancient buildings. The pore structure, influenced by manufacturing processes, recipes, and technical expedients, plays a significant role in the strength and durability of mortars. Fermenting organic matter in water and adding it to lime mixture has shown promising potential for improving workability and mechanical performance. The use of high-resolution synchrotron radiation computed microtomography (SR-mu-CT) proves to be an effective tool for studying the contribution of organically fermented water in lime mortars and understanding the impact on pore structure and mechanical properties.
